Happy Valentine’s Day (almost)! Love is in the air, or at least all the cheesy greeting cards, candy and sappy love movies are making me think that’s the case. Whether you’re five years old handing out little cards to everyone in your class, a young adult who follows tips on swingers advice or 50 years old giving a single card and some flowers to your one true love, there’s just something about February 14th that can’t be denied as a great day to celebrate love. Buy why? What’s the point of celebrating on that day? Why not every day? [Read more…]
Five Minutes on New Year’s Resolutions
New Year’s Resolutions are stupid. I could stop right there and you’d know how we feel about this topic, but you’d miss the point of today’s post. The reason New Year’s Resolutions are dumb is because they don’t work. How do I know this? Well, just about every news story from December 28th – January 2nd or so will have something to do with how to keep New Year’s Resolutions and the rest of the stories in that time frame will be about how no one actually keeps them.
Now that I’ve unashamedly bashed New Year’s Resolutions, let’s talk about resolutions that actually DO work. [Read more…]
Annie and Andy’s 2013 Christmas Gifts
In the past, it’s been very popular with you guys when I post the gifts that we’ve chosen for Annie and Andy. As you know, we have a 3-Gift Christmas here – meaning we give three gifts to each child. One of gold (a treasured gift, usually a toy), one of frankincense (something for worship), and one of myrrh (something for the body).
This has become a very interesting topic to a lot of people – so much so that we were interviewed for The Today Show blog and also for WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas. We are so tickled to be able to share this idea (one we heard of ourselves) with others – so that we can focus on the true meaning of Christmas…and keep our budgets intact. 😉 [Read more…]
Five Minutes on Christmas
Christmas is almost here! And this post won’t be long — I just want to talk for Five Minutes on Christmas. That’s great news for some of you and miserable sadness for others. Christmas is one of those holidays that has a reputation for bringing out the best and worst in people. Don’t believe me? Look around! Our area made national news for Black Friday fights in Walmart. Classy, people…really classy. But then you hear stories of awesome generosity or cool marketing ploys by creative companies.
Here’s the problem – most of us have been duped.
We’ve been indoctrinated with political correctness and similar garbage that have convinced so many that Christmas is about everything EXCEPT what it is really about. Think about it: most retailers want you to think Christmas is all about busting your budget in the name of creating happiness for everyone you’ve ever met.
“Merry Christmas” has been replaced with “Happy Holidays”…
Because we wouldn’t want to offend someone who doesn’t celebrate Christmas or acknowledge CHRIST as the message of December 25th. But here’s reality…
Christmas is about JESUS.
It’s about THE GIFT, not a bunch of gifts. Christmas is not about good feelings, overindulgent meals, Santa, trees, cards, bells, sleigh rides, snow, lights, or anything else that we might use as a symbol of Christmas. I’ll be totally honest: I’ve loved and hated Christmas over the years.
Some years I forgot it wasn’t about me and was selfish.
One year I saved up a bunch of time and took almost the entire month of December off from work and spent it with Stacy doing whatever we felt like. Last year was my first without my Dad there. I understand why people can get hung up on Christmas. So here’s how it works for the Myers.
- Christmas is a day of joy and recognition of our salvation, come to the earth in the form of a baby.
- Christmas is a day of fun (remember, God called us to have life and have it abundantly!).
- Not only does Christmas involves celebration and family time, but also worship.
- Presents? Even though I’ll have a few to open, God has blessed me so richly that I can honestly say there is nothing I need that I don’t already have. We buy presents for our kids, but with some perspective and WITHIN BUDGET. Stacy was recently interviewed by NBC for the Today Show on our “three gift Christmas” – you should check out the article
Okay, enough of me typing – Stacy and I thought you might like to watch us talk a bit! We’re calling it our Five Minutes Christmas and sharing so that y’all can see how it works for us, and promoting everything using Outdoor Advertising for this.
How do you feel about Christmas? Is it a warm, enjoyable time for you and your family or a struggle?
Advent 2013
This is our fourth Christmas celebrating Advent together as a family. Each year I am more excited about it than the year before…because this is a time when our family can bond and sing kum-ba-ya. Ha, ha! No really, we SO enjoy our yearly Advent activities – because it’s a time when we can focus on Christ and spending time together…instead of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and the stress that can sometimes accompany it.
So, let me catch you up if you’ve joined us since last year. Our family celebrates Christ’s birth by focusing on Advent during the holiday season. We start December 1st and have a family activity every day through the 25th instead of the traditional gifts. Each day our activity is accompanied by an Advent devotion using Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room (affiliate link, as usual). I’ll put some past Advent links at the bottom of the post in case you want to see them. [Read more…]
How Cloth Diapering Can Save You $$$
Guest Post by Erin of The Humbled Homemaker
Part of this post is an excerpt from the eBook, Confessions of a Cloth Diaper Convert: A Simple, Comprehensive Guide to Using Cloth Diapers.
It’s not hard to see how cloth diapering can save you money. The question is: Will you get passed the cloth diapering myths and let cloth diapering open up more room in your overall budget?!
When I was expecting our second baby and it was obviously that our firstborn was not going to be easy to potty train, I started to fret about how in the world we would be able to afford disposable diapers for two.
Five Minutes on Halloween
We don’t celebrate Halloween. I figure I’d better start there so we can avoid any questions about where we stand. Even though Stacy didn’t celebrate Halloween growing up, when I was a kid, Halloween was a big event. Get dressed up, run all over a neighborhood (or few), stock up on all the candy humanly possible and gorge myself for as long as the candy would last – yes, please. Despite getting dressed up as a vampire at one point and who knows what all else, I never associated Halloween with anything other than a fun night to get free candy. It was innocent – honestly. I don’t have a problem if you celebrate Halloween like this. If dressing up and eating massive quantities of candy is your thing – GO FOR IT. We just don’t do Halloween in our family. Here’s why. Five Minutes on Mean Parents
It goes like this: Mommy and Daddy say “no” to their child and he/she screams, “I hate you! You’re mean to me! You don’t love me! You’re such a meanie!” Even the most sainted of parents has probably experienced this…or will. Thankfully, we’ve not yet heard those words from our angelic 4-year-old, who only shares loving, uplifting encouragement for her parents. And Andy (almost 1)…you can tell he only has positive thoughts about Mom and Dad too. HAHAHAHAHAHA…yeah, right. Not a chance that’s reality for any parent in the universe. But why is that?
Five Minutes on Submission
Today we’re back with another “5 Minutes On” video. This week, we decided to tackle a specific question that came from a woman responding to our last video about fighting with your spouse and also touches a bit about working in your strengths as we discussed in the video about how we divide up chores around the Myers household. What was the question? How do you submit to your husband?
As a man and a husband, the idea of the “modern family” where everyone has an equal say just doesn’t work for me.
Preparing for Whatever the Future Holds
The title for this post was the hardest of all for me. What to call it…hmm… Some potential options were:
- Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse
- The Government and Me: a Love Story
- Back to the Future 4: Insanity Overtakes America
- Fearmongering 101
- DIY Tin Foil Hat Ideas
I settled for a title that is a little less outlandish but hopefully still conveys the idea behind today’s post. What does tomorrow hold? Good question. Today, I’m going to go through a quick run-down of some of the ways I believe we should all be prepared to deal with the future, without becoming die-hard conspiracy theorists and without ending up on a terrorist watch list. Your comments for this should be fun, if nothing else. Let’s dive in.
