Relationships and Money: 5 Things Every Couple Needs to Know

A lot of you are new around here, so I’ve been spending some time recapping some of my favorite content written since Humorous Homemaking was born in May 2010.  One of the ways I’m determining which content is best to share with you anew, I consider the most frequently asked questions I get via email, Facebook, etc.  By far, the most common set of questions falls under the heading of relationships and money or marriage and money.

I get TONS of questions on how to get husbands and wives to agree on money.  Why? Because I firmly believe when you said “I do” you made a commitment for life. Unfortunately, the reason that commitment is most commonly broken is due to money problems.  When I started providing financial counsel, I quickly learned I often provided a lot of marriage counseling too.

Keeping Christmas Simple

simple christmas

Everywhere we look, it seems like we’re inundated with things to do for Christmas:

  • Beautiful trees
  • Crafts
  • Fancy desserts
  • BIG gifts
  • Trips
  • Parties

Is there anything wrong with any of that? Absolutely not! Those are all wonderful things!!! The problem is, when those things stress us out, and keep us from enjoying our time with family, we don’t really need them and we an also easily ease stress by taking prescribed THC gummies.

Trashy Pizza Date Night

trashy pizza date night

It’s really easy to make excuses for NOT going on a date night with your spouse. No one argues whether or not it is important, but there seem to be all these “reasons” to not make it happen:

  • It costs too much money.
  • No one can watch the kids and babysitters are expensive.
  • There’s nothing to do around here.
  • No one can watch the kids and babysitters are expensive.
  • We don’t have the extra time.
  • No one can watch the kids and babysitters are expensive.

If it’s important, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.

The Snack Basket

snack basket for kids

(Saving Mommy’s sanity since 2018)

I’m not sure about you, but the NUMBER ONE question my kids seem to ask is: Can I have a snack? I’ll be honest – this question drives me bonkers. “You just ate like 5 minutes ago. How can you be hungry again? You haven’t even finished chewing that last bite.” The snack basket idea has officially saved my sanity.

Three Hard Things to Teach Your Kids {and the resources we’ve used to help}

I often wonder why so many details were left out of the early parenting books I read, like What To Expect When You’re Expecting. Teaching your kids the hard things is almost entirely avoided. They don’t even cover things like:

  • Kids are LOUD
  • There’s going to be a LOT of poop (and not always in a diaper)
  • You’re going to have to teach them about sex one day
  • And so many, many more!

Why We Choose to Homeschool

why we homeschool

Without exception, a common question that Barry and I get every single school year is: “Why did you guys decide to homeschool?”

When we first started out, we didn’t articulate our answer all that well, but the answer hasn’t changed. Simply put, we don’t believe you can separate God and education. Ever. This is our sixth year homeschooling, and we believe this now more than ever.

Sleep Tips…For Those Who Have Tried “Everything”

kid sleep tips

Most of you probably know, I have 4 children between the ages of 10 and 3.  And y’all, my oldest, Annie, did not sleep the whole night through until she was nearly 5 years old. That’s right – just month before her 5th birthday! I tried nearly every sleep tip under the sun – I was desperate for sleep!

But….What Do You Do with Your Kids?

working with kids

Without a doubt, that’s the question I receive the MOST often: “But Stacy…what do you do with your kids when you are ____?” (cleaning the house, making the food, folding laundry, etc.). Working with kids at home isn’t the easiest thing, but it IS possible.

For the first time in my parenting career, I had help this summer. Our family friend, Lillee, came over to watch the kids for a few hours each week (Mother’s Helper type) so I could work on my two online businesses. It has been wonderful to have that help working with kids. For 10 years I didn’t have that help.

So what did I do?

Why Every Mom Fail Matters

mom fail

As a dad of four young kids, I’m in awe of what it takes to be a mom. I’m definitely not capable of doing what most of you moms out there accomplish. I regularly tell people that Stacy is a superhero…and I mean it. But here’s the thing, ladies – you are way too hard on yourself. Every mom fail matters!

However, using someone’s cheery social media feed as your standard, you’ve decided that you can’t measure up and that you’re a complete disaster. In doing that, you’ve set an unrealistic expectation that you literally will never be able to live up to.

Here’s the thing: we need you to fail.

Conscious Language: What it is and How it Works

conscious language

Let me preface this by saying I am not a doctor – shocker, right? I’m definitely not a psychiatrist, psychologist, or any sort of expert in these types of things. But I have done a lot of reading on the topic of conscious language and have all sorts of thoughts to share. Spoiler Alert: Conscious Language has changed a LOT (for the better) for us.

You’ll either love this tip or hate it. 🤣⠀ You’ll either love this tip or hate it. 🤣⠀
⠀
If you hate it, just scroll on by. 🤍 But it was helpful to us. 🥰⠀
⠀
Often, I have a hard time getting my kids to remember things I’ve taught them, like how to properly clean a toilet or clean mirrors. “I forgot.”⠀
⠀
You know what they don’t forget? Stuff they watch on You Tube. 🤪🤪⠀
⠀
So I went to You Tube and sourced kid videos about cleaning the bathroom. The kids all watched them. ⠀
⠀
Now they’re all cleaning their own bathrooms. Boom. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Worked for us. ⠀
⠀
** Just search on YT for “kid cleaning videos” and see what you find. Different parents have different parameters for what they allow. Barry and I screened videos first but each person can find their own. ❤️🤍

⠀
Hard times can make us or break us.

Our family experienced some big changes and shocks and pruning (removing) in 2021. Some days I didn’t want to get out of my house or my bed.⠀
⠀
But already we are coming out of darkness into His wonderful light and I can see - I can see the benefits of hard times. ⠀
⠀
New beautiful growth and hope. ❤️⠀
⠀
What is one benefit YOU have experienced from hard times?
This culture has nothing to offer our family.⠀
⠀
I lived for too long believing that hustle was to the benefit of this family. ⠀
⠀
God’s call upon our life isn’t to hustle and grind our days away while we prove our worth and see our success. ⠀
⠀
No, friends. It’s God’s desire that when people look at you and me, they don’t see US or what WE accomplished but instead say:⠀
⠀
Wow, only God did that. ⠀
