Ilove apples. That should be very apparent to you by now….hence all the apple recipes like Crock Pot Apple Butter, Baked Apples, and Apple Crowns. I kept seeing tons of apple recipes for the crock pot, but I didn’t really like any of them. So, I sorta came up with my own and it’s delicious! I hate to toot my own horn, but TOOT! TOOT! Barry said “Yum! I’d be happy with just a whole plate of these.” Not so fast, buddy boy. Stacy and her apples are not soon parted – but I did share. I’m nice like that. [Read more…] |

Homemade Greek Yogurt
Annie can kick back the yogurt. Seriously. Applesauce and yogurt are her two favorite foods. If she even sees it on the counter, you’re a goner. If you had plans for that yogurt in a recipe, you’re outta luck. I’m going to have to start hiding yogurt in a paper bag like it’s liquor or something. And she really, REALLY likes Greek yogurt – but I DIDN’T……have you noticed that it’s a lot more expensive than regular yogurt? But following the fashion of most of my kitchen capers, I decided I would save money and make it myself (also going to show y’all how to make your own yogurt here in a week or so). It’s really very easy and will save you money that you can use at yard sales. |
You’ll need cheesecloth and yogurt. That’s it. Are you surprised? You should know by now that I’m really not into difficult stuff. You can buy cheesecloth just about anywhere. It’s easy to find at fabric stores – mine is from Hancock Fabrics. You can use plain yogurt or flavored yogurt. Our family favorite happens to be plain ole vanilla…..and I’m a Dannon fan. Healthy Eating Resources
If you missed it, you can go back and read this post about our baby steps toward healthy eating. I thought it might benefit you all to know what exactly it is that we are reading and learning about. You might want to read it yourself…..and I encourage you to do so. If you’re too busy to read it all, you’ll probably hear most of it here at Humorous Homemaking anyway – sorta like Cliff’s Notes with no test. I wasn’t a Cliff’s Notes user…..I actually read the books. Astonishing, right? You’ll notice that some of my recipes are starting to change. I don’t plan on taking off my old recipes because I like seeing where I’ve come from. Plus, almost any recipe can be adapted to a whole foods diet. We’re still working on getting rid of some of the stuff that I accumulated, but like I mentioned before we are not replacing it with the same stuff – we’re replacing it with whole foods. Let’s learn! (I’m such a dweeb…..do people still say dweeb?) [Read more…] |
Frugal Father’s Day Gifts
In the pattern of all things frugal at Humorous Homemaking, I decided to do a post for you all to give you some frugal ideas for Father’s Day. I looked at tons of websites to see what dads really want…..and are you ready for this? Most of the time, those things aren’t expensive. However, I did find out that most dads do not want a big honking orange tie that says BEST DAD on it. They really don’t….why do you think you find those on the clearance rack? Last year I got Barry a cheesy gift from Annie – a mug with photos on it. He’s still using it….he’s more graceful than I am, so he doesn’t break his funny mugs on a regular basis. This year we decided that we weren’t going to spend money on gifts for each other until we paid off the house. That’s our gift to each other instead – extra house payments. But, here are some ideas for you that will cost little out of pocket for you. If you have a dad who loves golfing, then you may consider these customized golf towels. And if your dad collects vintage stuff, then you may consider adding vintage gas globes to his collection. |
This one popped up everywhere I looked. Dads want clean cars……those Cheerios on the floor that don’t bother you, really bother him. Really. He’s afraid he’ll go to an important meeting with a Cheerio plastered to his rear end. He would really love it if you and the kids would spend some time cleaning his car on the inside and out. This one should be pretty much free if you have car supplies at home – it only costs you time…..which he will really appreciate. Don’t put a flowerdy air freshener in there when you’re done – more like one in the scent of dirt…….or grease. [Read more…] |
How to Cook Quinoa
Maybe you’ve seen quinoa listed in recipes…..but you passed right over it because you didn’t know what the heck it was – or how to pronounce it. Trust me, I have issues with my pronunciation of tons of things (just ask Barry). If I see a recipe with something weird listed in it, I usually pass it over and don’t give it a second thought (or if it has clam shells in it, what IS that about? Gag attack!)……but please don’t do that with quinoa! It’s not weird, it’s tasty. You say it like KEEN-WAH. I know, I know. This world would be an easier place to live if you spelled things like they were said. Sheesh. But anyway, that’s how you say it. It’s not a grain or a cereal…it’s actually in the grass family. Yep, Stacy’s finally gone off the deep end because now she’s telling you to eat grass. It’s SO easy to prepare…..faster than rice and just a tad bit longer than boiling pasta. Let me show you how to do it and you’ll start cooking it for yourself. You can find it in just about any store, usually in the fancy grocery section (i.e. organic). It’s not cheap like pasta or rice, but it’s not too bad. I like having something different once and a while, especially when it’s good for me. I buy mine in bulk at King’s Produce in Wytheville…..almost anything you can buy in bulk will be cheaper. [Read more…] |
Crock Pot Chicken Fajitas
Oh. My. Word. These are amazing. Actually, amazing doesn’t even cover it. They are stupendous! Spectacular! Dreamy! Totally Tubular! You want to make these soon. Very soon. In fact, you’re already too late. Gosh, you’re so slow……cooker. Slow cooker, get it? Okay, sorry.
