When I was pregnant with Annie, I went hog wild and pig crazy over apples. I ate them every day. Yes, plural. Sometimes three a day. I couldn’t get enough. Now, apples and applesauce are one of her favorite foods. With Andy, it was bananas. I would have attacked you over eating my banana – and he LOVES them now too. It’s a good thing I didn’t gorge myself on Skittles and Doritos.
I still love apple dishes. If I come across a recipe with “apple” in the title, I’m always gonna read it. As much as I love them, I don’t care for traditional apple chutney. It usually includes chopped onion and vinegar. I’m sorry, but I just cannot do that with my apples. It seems wrong to me – like I’m cheating on caramel or something.
So, I decided that I was going to make my own SWEET version of apple chutney – kicking out the onion and vinegar – I will save that for BBQ. Of course I had to make it in the crock pot…because if you haven’t caught on in about three years, I’m in love with my crocks.
I used Gala apples for this particular batch…because that’s what I had in the fridge. Just use whatever apples you have available…that’s about as spontaneous as I can get.
Also, most chutney calls for raisins. I used goji berries instead. You can use raisins if you prefer. But gojis are just so delicious – like eating a big ole Sour Patch Kid – but without the guilt.
This recipe is awesome because you just mix everything up in the crock. No extra dishes. That’s a happy thing for me – because even though I love to wash dishes, I don’t like to wash dishes for no reason…I have other things to do with my time.
This is one of the few recipes that I post that cooks on HIGH. I don’t usually care for cooking on high because it makes me nervous – I’m afraid I’ll burn the house down…kinda like when I try to make Candied Nuts in the oven.
When I was trying to make this batch, our power went out. That’s my biggest fear when I turn my crock on…that the power will go out. Or that I’ll burn the house down. Those two.
So, what do you do with chutney? Well, about a million things. You can serve it over yogurt. You can serve it over meat. You can eat it on bread. You can slather it on your pancakes. I even threw some into a smoothie and it was GOOD. Or you can stand at the kitchen counter and shovel it into your mouth with a spoon. I ain’t proud.
This would freeze very well – if it lasts that long.
Be careful cooking this. You still want to maintain the shape of your apple pieces. Too long and this becomes Sweet Apple Chutney Sauce. And that’s cool. Call it whatever…as long as you call me when it’s ready.
Crock Pot Sweet Apple Chutney

Your Crock Pot Sweet Apple Chutney sounds absolutely delicious! I really like that you can make it in a crock pot (although I share your crock pot fears about power failures and burning the house down!). I’m linking to your post as a feature in this week’s Hearth and Soul blog hop post. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Oh, yummy! This begs for some sort of low carb cinnamon turn over type concoction!
Where do you find goji berries? I’ve never tried them!

One of my very favorite things is Mango Chutney with stuffed grilled jalapenos – they temper the heat and adds such dimension to the grillin favorite! I love seeing a recipe for homemade chutney!!! I might actually have to try making it now 🙂 Thank you so much for linking up!!!

I always see Chutney recipes, and I never know quite what I’m supposed to do with chutney. I like that you included suggestions!

I’m glad I decided to go ahead and look at this….when I saw chutney, I moved on then I decided to look back when I realized it said sweet. This is something I think I’ll like. I’m with you…vinegar and onion, with apples? Not a good match. Caramel, sugar, cinnamon, even goji berries..apples? Yes ma’am!
Stacy says
Yep! If you want to…I’d rather freeze.

LOL This made me laugh…what doesn’t interest you?

It’s been a while since one of your posts hasn’t caught my interest in some shape or form – been liking the 5minute videos… my husband has come downstairs both weeks and asked what I was laughing at! I guess a few posts aren’t as intriguing because I roll my eyes and think… there is no way my (super-picky) husband will like that!(but then I think… there’s always lunch time for me and the kiddos!!!)

Thanks!

Oh Stacy. Your posts make me smile. I look forward to reading every one…even the odd one that doesn’t really interest me because your sense of humour is great! Every post makes me chuckle….ok, burst out laughing right out loud…which isn’t usually a good thing since I do my blog reading during nap time… thank goodness for heavy sleepers…..ANYWAY, can’t wait to try this recipe! Thanks for sharing.
