Why Full Fat Dairy

If you would have asked me last year if I would switch my family to all full fat dairy, I would have laughed at you. Me? Ha! That’s crazy talk…….full fat means I’ll get fat, right? Uh, well not exactly. Actually, not at all. I did avoid fat free cheese because the rubbery texture gave me the heebie jeebies. But, I always bought skim milk, fat free sour cream, and reduced fat cream cheese. Always. But not anymore….in fact, now if I have to pour skim milk, my first thought is “Oh my gosh! Something is wrong with this milk!” I am not a doctor…..but that would be cool huh? Doctor Stacy. HAHAHAHAHA! Anyway, this is why our family has switched to full fat dairy. You must make the choice for yourself.Research has shown that people who eat full fat dairy products are less likely to die from heart disease or stroke. Yes, milk has saturated fat but God created it really cool…..He made it so that the other stuff in milk balances that saturated fat. Think about it for a minute……we feed our young children whole milk. Shouldn’t we all be eating like a small child? They drink whole milk, eat half a sandwich and then go play for 2 hours.
Let’s just go ahead and get the obvious out of the way…..full fat products taste better. Yes. You cannot deny that. They just have a nice, full bodied flavor that satisfies. If you’re going to eat it, why not eat it right? And really, I always go on rants about fat free cheese. Man, the stuff is disgusting. When you melt it, it turns into this rubber substance you can’t even chew. You might as well come over and eat Annie’s toy cheese…..quit buying it. BLECH! It makes me shudder. What is IN there? No wait….don’t tell me. I don’t want to know. As far as baking goes, you’ll have difficulty getting low fat/fat free products to act the same as regular ones. It can be done, but the result is never as good. Whole milk is already 80% water……what do you think about skim milk? It already looks like white water – and not the cool kind that you ride down in a raft.
Yes, whole dairy has fat……but it also has vitamins and minerals. Did you know that your body cannot absorb certain vitamins unless you eat fat with them? The vitamins you find in whole milk are A and D….the fat in the milk helps you absorb those vitamins. There is also evidence that full fat dairy can help prevent obesity and high blood pressure.  Really, why would you want to eat something if you can’t get the benefits from it? Why not get your vitamins from your milk instead of popping fifty zillion pills per day?
You might recall that I’ve mentioned this book before, What The Bible Says About Healthy Living. It’s not one of those crazy books that tells you when the world is ending and that you should wait on your roof for Jesus while wearing a potato sack and eating leaf lettuce. I’m a pretty hard sell when it comes to food, but this book is very convicting to me. I recommend you read it. Rex Russell says we should be eating food like God created it…..as close as humanly possible that we can. For me, that means whole milk and full fat dairy. Don’t you think God knew what He was doing? If he wanted us to drink fat free milk, don’t you think he would have created a Fat Free Cow? He created everything with the right amount of vitamins and nutrients for us…..and we try to make it better. Getting back to natural for us means buying whole milk at the store.

Okay, so being serious……as close as we can get to how God made it would be drinking milk straight out of the udder (I just like saying udder). Stacy grew up on milk straight out of the cow. When I was little, my Daddy was a dairy farmer. However, as things progressed, dairy farming became less of a way to support family – unless you were a big operation. Now my Daddy is a beef-cattle farmer…..go meat! I would love to be able to get raw milk for our family. There are TONS of benefits to drinking raw milk. Some people are grossed out that it’s NON PASTEURIZED. Well, as long as the cow was in the PASTURE eating grass, I think I’d be pretty doggone happy. In Tennessee and Virginia, it is illegal to sell raw milk so that’s why we’re still buying whole milk at the store. Yes, you can buy a “share” in a cow and get your milk that way but that’s not something we’ve chosen to do……yet. Instead, I’m buying my milk from a local dairy whenever I can – Duchess Dairy.

So, that’s why our family buys whole milk. One day I’d love to have a jersey cow with my chickens. Okay, so not WITH my chickens but in the same general vicinity. Every time I tell my Daddy that, he sorta rolls his eyes at me and says “Well who’s gonna milk it?” So yeah, I struggle with this allergy to hay…..but nevermind. I might still get my jersey cow.

I have always struggled with my weight. In the last couple of years I gave up artificial sweetners and started buying whole milk. Eat butter. I have not gained any weight. I haven’t lost weight, but I am enjoying food, not dieting and not gaining weight. I’ll take it.

🙂 I was just thinking of this again last night….how I can stay the same size and eat all the butter I want. It’s nice. 🙂

The natural store we buy our meat from has milk that has the cream on top… I quit buying it because it would go bad before we would use it all. We don’t do a lot of milk in our house. I do buy whole milk and I buy the organic whole milk. I like the milk our natural meat store has. It tastes like a milk shake instead of watered down milk.

I couldn’t agree more….eat things the way they were intended to be eaten! Moderation is the key.
