Sugar Detox Challenge – Week Five

Okay, let’s have a recap. Our family decided to go on a Sugar Detox in order to get rid of a lot of the bad sugars that we still had in our diet, even though we were on the path to Whole Foods. I’ve rid the house of High Fructose Corn Syrup, all white flours, desserts even with healthy sugars, and all sugars except those like honey, Sucanat, and maple syrup. We’re still doing great. Our only challenge comes in trying to explain to others why we’re passing the dessert table. At this point, I’m used to people thinking I’m weird, so it’s no big deal for me.
This one really threw me for a loop. I stared at the email for a while…..I’m not sure how long. I was in total shock. This week, we give up all quick breads. All of them. I’m talking muffins, pancakes, waffles, sweet breads, biscuits and scones. They’re gone. It’s SAD. Really. I wanted to pack it up and call it quits. Our family eats a large amount of quick breads for breakfast – especially pancakes. I’m using healthy flours and natural sugars now, so I was flabbergasted as to why I had to get rid of my healthy quick breads. And I wasn’t happy about it. I’m still not happy about it. I’m bitter. Very bitter. It’s going to be four full weeks of eggs and oatmeal. Why am I doing this again? Why is Donielle taking away my quick breads? Well, I’m still not entirely sure. I don’t mind giving up my bad sugars and my white flours…..I feel better. I do NOT feel better about giving up my sourdough pancakes. But, I’m a trooper so I’ll stick with it. Just don’t eat any pancakes around me for four weeks……don’t even speak of them to me. Okay?Donielle says that all flours, even whole wheat, have an effect on the glucose level. Okay, I can understand that. But my pancakes? Really? I’m bitter. Have I mentioned that?
Too much sugar is linked to brittle nails, gallstones, wrinkles, sore joints, and lack of elasticity in your in your muscle tissue. Wow. Sounds like one of those commercials for pharmaceuticals. “You can take this drug to cure your problem, but if you do you might experience these symptoms: gambling, yelling, headache, belly ache, feet ache, muscle spasms, restless leg syndrome, death, gray hair, insomnia, or flu.” Is sugar a pharmaceutical? Hmmmmmm.
We learn about a new sugar this week too – Muscovado Sugar. Guess what? I never heard of it. I looked up some photos. It looks pretty much like brown sugar. It’s like Sucanat but processed with lime juice and coconut milk. Oh, and here’s something about it – it’s about FIVE DOLLARS PER POUND! Good night! I don’t think I’ll be adding that to my pantry any time soon. Shew. It must also be processed with a gold bowl or something. I think I’ll pass and stick with honey. So, that’s week five. I will admit, I’m scared about week six. What is next? I’m shaking in my bitter boots. I want pancakes. I want waffles. This stinks. But I’m not a quitter. Yet…..but I might be before this is over. Good night. My pancakes?!
If you want to follow me on this journey and go through a sugar detox yourself, you can sign up with Donielle and get the emails delivered to you once a week. It’s been really good for us……aside from the pancakes.Sign up for the Sugar Detox Challenge.

Wow, we don’t have pancakes very often but good luck. What about making french toast? You didn’t mention regular bread – my kids love french toast and it’s kind of similar to pancakes?? Maybe??

That’s a good point. Yeast breads are still in. 🙂 We make Waffle French Toast a lot: http://www.stacymakescents.com/waffle-french-toast
Thanks so much for the idea! I was wigging out. 🙂 Ha, ha!
