Peanut Butter Kefir Smoothies

We love smoothies here at the Myers house. If I’m going to be making a lot of them, I make a smoothie base and keep it in the fridge (thanks Brandy!). I am always looking for good ways to use up my kefir and get the great benefits of all the probiotics……especially as it’s getting closer to the time of year when sickness abounds. This is one of my favorite smoothies – probably because it has peanut butter in it and I’m a peanut butter fanatic. I’ve used kefir in this smoothie, but feel free to use plain yogurt in its place. You’ll need kefir (or yogurt), a ripe banana, honey (I used raw), wheat germ, peanut butter and vanilla.

Throw all your ingredients down into your blender. I used homemade peanut butter from the Farmer’s Market….which I LOVE. Also, the reason I say “raw honey” is so that you can get the full benefit of your honey. Local raw honey can help you build an immunity to allergies, so I try to work it in whenever I can….if you heat it, it loses that benefit, so we try to eat it with cold things. The wheat germ is in there just because I like the flavor of wheat germ in my smoothies.

Turn on your blender and let it work….make sure to put the lid on there. That’s important. I know from experience. Let it blend long enough to get all the peanut butter mixed in. I didn’t do that and had to re-blend. Sometimes I get in a hurry where peanut butter is involved.

Pour it into your glass and you’re ready to go! We love these. They are so full of flavor. It’s a great way to get rid of over-ripe bananas. This is probably my favorite smoothie of all time.

Peanut Butter Kefir Smoothie

  • ½ cup kefir (or plain yogurt)
  • 1 medium ripe banana
  • 2 tablespoons honey (preferably raw)
  • 1 tablespoon wheat germ
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.
  2. Serve immediately.

    I love peanut butter smoothies with pretty much any ingredients added in. I used to make them with protein powder + banana and other ingredients – but I have yet to try making one with kefir. I think it would be a great thing to try, as the kefir is a great way to add a healthy element to the mix! Thank you for sharing your recipe!

    Thank you for this recipe. I didn’t have a banana and I still taste too much of the kefir, so I’ll try it again tomorrow. A great thing to do with kefir is to strain it through a cotton jelly bag and make quark cheese. I do it all the time. I bought very wide mouth jars to put the jelly bags over for straining the kefir because the stand tipped over in the fridge, and once all over my stove. The longer you strain it, the more you will have a cream cheese like consistency.

    Has never crossed my mind to mix my kefir with peanut butter, however it sounds just great.

    So… adding RAW honey to HOT tea would defeat the purpose; the honey would no longer be RAW?

      From what I read, to get the benefits of RAW honey you really shouldn’t heat it over 120 degrees. If I’m going to use it in something that gets hot, I don’t really care if it’s raw honey. 🙂 I save my raw stuff for eating cool or cold to get the most benefit.
