When I first got married and started doing a lot more cooking, I wanted a mandoline slicer. I had seen them used on TV, so they had to be awesome, right? The only versions I saw were at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for around $70! Whew! That was just too rich for my blood……especially when I knew it wasn’t a necessity. I would still go visit it….rub the box…….stare at it and dream about all the amazing things we could do in the kitchen. Then I’d walk away and cry my little heart out. Ok, so I didn’t cry, but I still missed it all the same. One fateful day I was with my mom in Ross and I saw THIS! Isn’t it beautiful!? Do you know how much this was??? $13.99. That’s it. A big step down from the $70 option. Guess what? I didn’t buy it the first day I saw it. I went home and stewed for about a week as to whether I should buy it. Finally, it won me over and I went back, praying that it was still there. Do you know it was in the EXACT same place I left it after I carted it around the store for an hour? I know what you’re thinking – no, I didn’t hide it. So I knew it must be fate…..we were destined to be together. I’ve used it several times and it’s just great! I don’t see any reason to think I got a bad deal or a cheap version. The blades are extra sharp, so I am pleased with my purchase. Keep your eyes peeled and you might find one too – maybe even cheaper than me! |
This lovely little device can cut just about anything. It will shred (large and small), slice (to the depth you choose), crinkle cut, grate, make fries, and it also comes with a juicer. I haven’t used the juicer yet……I don’t have a lot of reasons to make my own juice since I only buy it cheap. I won’t lie and tell you this tool isn’t intimidating. Right before I started to slice my first thing, I thought “Am I going to lose a small limb?” I have a bad history of “accidentally” cutting myself……Barry calls me Grace. So far I haven’t cut anything off! Score for Stacy! There are several different blade attachments depending on what you want to do. There’s a little button on the side that you push when you want to take one off and replace with another. It’s very easy to do……I’m not exactly Sherlock Holmes with appliances, so when I was able to do it easily I knew it must be pretty simple. Also, see that little wheel on the side? That’s how you adjust the depth for what you’re slicing. It’s so easy a caveman could do it…….well, I don’t know about that. I’m just copying that commercial. Not sure why since I never understood it. I’d always look at Barry and say, “I don’t get it.” |
I buy my cheese in block form instead of already shredded, so I was very pleased to find a shredding attachment. I like variety, so the large and small shred options tickled me pink! Hmmmm, would I like large cheese or small cheese today? Anything goes! The shredder is very sharp, so it didn’t take much time to shred my cheese. |
See, here it is – large on the right and small on the left. Pretty! I just love shredded cheese. Somehow it always finds its way into my mouth. It’s a mystery, really. Depending on what you are making, you might want large (pizza) or small (casserole topping). Embrace diversity. |
When I wanted to make some Zucchini Bread, I pulled this puppy out! Normally I would shred zucchini, but I wanted to try the grater. It worked “grate!” Ha, ha! You knew that was coming. It was a little wet, but that was good for the Zucchini Bread since I was able to let the juice run off and not interfere with the batter. Notice I left the top on the zucchini so I wouldn’t shred my fingers/knuckles. Me and Carrot Cake have a bad history, so I wanted to make sure that I didn’t add Zucchini Bread to the list. |
I’m somewhat obsessed with pretty food. I like to sprinkle, arrange, and embellish…..so I LOVE the crinkle cut blade. Look how pretty! My cucumbers are stylin’! It’s so easy to slide the veggies across the blade. Just make sure it doesn’t also become easy to slide your fingers across the blade. No one wants that surprise in their salad. |
Honey, if you’ve never had homemade fries you’ve been deprived. Make some today. WHEW! They’re delicious…….fried in the skillet or baked in the oven. I love them. So do Barry and Dottie. Annie’s weird about potatoes so far – not including potato chips. You can cut them large or small and also make them crinkle cut if you like. You just leave the slicing blade or the crinkle blade attached, then you push a button on the side to bring up the blades for cutting “fries.” You’ll push the vegetable over those blades and down into the slicing blade. Easy! Your kids will think you’re just totally amazing. |
I love onion on my burger. LOVE IT. But, I don’t like it sliced thick. Ew. That’s where this little contraption comes in handy. It’s great for slicing things very thin…….and you can do a bunch in a short amount of time! So, if you’re planning a cookout then this is a great tool to have handy. Uniform thickness at home instead of the restaurant. Sorry, Burger King! |
It will also slice tomato. My problem with that was, I let this tomato sit too long and it was very smushy. However, it was the only one I had and we needed it……it still sliced okay, but it sorta got deformed. Next time I have a tomato that’s really soft, I’ll just use my tomato knife instead. |
See what I am talking about? But look how pretty and uniform my onions are! I felt so professional. You will too! Don’t buy the super expensive version (unless you have a gift card of course, or you’re a millionaire) since the Ross deal works great! If you feel like splurging on something for your kitchen, this might be a nice addition for you. |

I was searching for something else and came across this mandoline post (I just bought one, for $3.50 & it came with a peeler…but it doesn’t have all the fancy blades, I think just one blade.) Anyway… not the point. For even fancier cucumbers, you can run the tines of a fork down the sides before slicing – then the slices end up looking like flowers.

I bought one of these today! I went to Ross and I saw two of them on the shelf. I picked it up and put in the buggy, then I took it out. I was thinking I don’t need that. Then I started thinking about the pretty slices of cucumber and onion on here and I couldn’t help it. Plus Brady said, just get it mommy, I gotta go potty real bad…lol. That’s the story of my mandoline. I also bought stuff to make hamburgers tonight so I can try it out.

I love that thing, the blade is really sharp and it even sliced my tomatoes perfectly. Thanks for the post.

I LOVE my mandoline. I had always wanted one, but never did anything about it. When we had our restaurant, we had the big commercial meat slicer and I got so hooked on that thing! I loved being able to make the thin slices of tomato, potato, cucumber and anything else I needed to do. So after we closed the restaurant, I got one at the HHI store in Pigeon Forge. Mine doesn’t have a grater though, wish I had that, too. Mine slices, juliennes, and dices.
