I’ve been asked to put together a little video about homemade cleaners – what do I actually use? I have a few favorites, and I’ll show you them below. I’ll also include the links that I talk about in the video.
I do purchase a lot of my items from Vitacost because the price is right, y’all.
NOTE: In the video I talk about using Windex – since shooting this video a few weeks ago, my friend Helen told me about a new product called ecloth for cleaning mirrors and windows. I ordered some and LOVE THEM!!!!! They work with only water and you just wash them like normal towels. I purchased my window ecloths from Milk Allergy Mom with FREE SHIPPING!!!! And no, I am not an affiliate who is trying to pad my pockets. 😉
Scum Buster Bar from The Prairie Homestead
Grapefruit Seed Extract
Love the “June Cleaver” rockin’ out doing household chores in the pearls!!! 🙂
Hi Stacy – These are great tips. Thanks for linking up with the Let’s Get Real Party this week.
Love your “tip of the day” about avoiding things spewing out of my toilet. Thanks for that. 🙂 Haha! Thanks for linking up to Let’s Get Real. It was nice to see/hear you to put a voice in my head when I read your posts 🙂
I use Tupperware’s Recipe for Homemade Glass Cleaner. Love. Love. Love. 8oz Water. *8oz White Vinegar. 8oz Rubbing Alcohol. No Streaks and it works like a charm. Have a blessed day!
Oh and also, I just use lemon and salt to clean my cutting boards. You sprinkle liberally with salt and rub a lemon all over it. If you don’t have a lemon, no problem. Rubbing the board with salt and letting it sit for a bit will clean it just fine.
We just make our own windex by getting a bottle of Ammonia and diluting it with water per the bottles intructions. I think it is 1/4 cup with water for one of the spray bottles. Actually works better than Windex and much cheaper. I think I have only bought one bottle of ammonia in the past 2 years.
Hi. I like to use hydrogen peroxide and black and white newspapers to clean mirrors and windows. You will get newsprint on your hands but it works really well. The newspapers get rid of streaks!
Hi Stacy, thanks so much for the shout-out to our e-cloth store. 🙂 And thanks to Helen for telling you about us! We continually post about green cleaning on our blog to help inform and educate. Our B1G1 General Purpose Cloths are now out of stock but we have them at regular price with free shipping in many colors. The B1G1 Glass Polishing is expected to go out of stock today. Again, those can be purchased in singles in different colors. One important note, you won’t want to wash your e-cloths with your towels or anything linty. The microfiber is so “grabby” and it can get clogged with lint. So it’s recommended to wash them with items like sheets, jeans, t-shirts…no-lint items. I hope that helps! 🙂
Thanks for the update!
Now that the B1G1’s are out of stock, the best bargain for window cleaning would be using a Window Cloth damp (2.49) followed by a Glass Polishing Cloth dry ($7.99). Hope that helps!
I love your videos! I make all my own cleaners, too, and love it. I pretty much just use white vinegar, water, and tea tree oil, though. Seems to clean up most anything I have to clean. I’ve also had great success cleaning windows and mirrors with just vinegar and water. The trick is to use a dry cloth. When I clean the bathrooms, I do the mirrors first before the rag gets wet. ( :
When I tried to do that, Barry told me to never do it again. LOL
“You never want anything spewing out of your toilet”—-bwa ha ha. Love it.
Well, you don’t – do ya? 🙂
Perfect timing, Stacy! I was just looking for a new recipe to try. I’ve been using orange/lemon peels soaked in vinegar. While I love the smell and the cleaning power in the sinks & on the counters, it tends to leave a slight orange/brown “stain” on my white chair rail/wanes coating wall in the bathroom behind the sink. :-/ I’m gonna try your all purpose recipe and see if that is better. I may have to use some baking soda & vinegar (and a bit of elbow grease) to get the stains off first though. LOL
BTW…if you’d like to try a new window/glass cleaner I found one online that someone called “Alvin Corn” (Alcohol/Vinegar/Cornstarch). In my experience it works well and is streak-free.
Thanks,
Misti
Thanks for this! I definitely want to get into natural cleaners. This will give me a great starting point. And wow – such fun cleaning toilets will be now. I have a feeling my little boys are going to be VERY anxious to help out ;)!
My boys will also love making explosions in the toilet! Maybe it will finally deter them from freezing their little toys in a bucket of water in the freezer….this week’s obsession.
I might not be making any cleaners any more, these cloths are so awesome. I just bought the window pack and the dusting cloth in my recent Azure order. I can’t get enough! And I got a mention in your post! WOW 🙂
Thank you, Helen, for sharing e-cloth with Stacy! 🙂 We appreciate it.
