Annie has LOVED bubbles ever since she was born. They fascinate her…and now they keep her occupied for a long time. Score for the bubbles! Today I’ve asked the Morefields from A Morefield Life to do a tutorial on how to make your own bubble solution. Thanks guys!
Living in an age full of technological marvels has its pros and cons. We can get in our cars and drive across town in a flash, hop on a plane and zip clear across the country in less than a day. Electricity and indoor plumbing, unavailable to most people just a hundred years ago, make our lives easier in countless ways. From the products we buy to the services we use, it seems like everything is or has to be ‘convenient.’ And while convenience can certainly be nice at times (no outhouses for me, thank you!), sometimes they can have a cost that, in the long run, truly isn’t worth it.
Today most kids have no clue where their food comes from because their parents get it out of a box, in a store full of similar boxes, conveniently prepackaged and filled with all sorts of convenient ingredients meant to ‘preserve’ it for the weeks or months it takes to get it from the farm to the factory to the trucks to the warehouses to the stores and, finally, to the pantries of time-strapped families who then nuke it in the microwave. By the time it’s finally consumed, there’s little (real) taste, or nutrition, left.
Soaps, long-ago home-made with a few ingredients, are today full of harmful chemicals and artificial ingredients. Same with laundry detergent, shampoo, household cleaners, and a host of other products. Such is one price of convenience, the cost of the perception in this fast-paced world that people simply do not have the time to make something, anything, from scratch. We have far more important things to do, like watch TV and… shop for more ‘convenient’ stuff.
Now I’ll get off my soapbox for a few minutes – my family doesn’t do everything we’d like to do, but our journey toward even a modicum of self-sufficiency has been fun and quite rewarding. These changes really only come one step at a time. Our challenge to you is to look into ALL the products you use, see if there’s something you can make yourself in an easier, more healthy, more cost-effective way.
Here’s a great, non-threatening, easy place to start that will entertain not only the kids in our lives, but also the kid inside ALL of us – because, let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoys bubbles?! Instead of going to the store to buy bubble solution full of potentially dangerous chemicals, why not see how easy it is to make your own?
Here’s how:
Homemade Bubble Solution
Ingredients
- 1 cup of water
- 4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid Dawn does really well, but most will do
- 2-4 tablespoons light karo syrup
Instructions
- Mix water with dishwashing liquid
- Add or corn syrup – the more of this you include, the longer the bubbles will last and the larger they will be, but the more residue they will leave behind when they pop).
- For colored bubbles, simply add food coloring to the solution.
Notes
Blow some bubbles!
Use your imagination for the bubble wands (paper towel tubes, bent coat hangers, cookie cutters, canning lids, or even old bubble wands from the days when you used to buy them!). There are other recipes out there that are worth trying, but these ingredients are probably already in your home.
Sure, this is a simple, very basic, easy thing! So, wherever you are on the road to self-sufficiency, why not try something else? Cook from scratch. Grow a garden. Can, dehydrate, and preserve a portion of your food. Make your own laundry detergent and household cleaners. The possibilities are endless, and so rewarding. Not only will you be limiting your family’s exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals and ingredients, but you will save money as well.
We are not meant to be mere cogs in an industrial, corporate machine, but were created by God to glorify Him, to explore His creation, to put our hands in the soil, get them dirty and truly be at one with the Creation He has given us dominion over. So go ahead, make some bubbles, then make something else. Just like blowing bubbles, it’s hard to stop at just one!
