Homemade Breadcrumbs

I know I’m not the only one out there with a lousy bag boy….am I? The bag “boy” at my Kroger thinks he’s Elvis. He wears his collar up and his hair greased back. I have not heard him sing……but I have seen him high tail it! Apparently he doesn’t like me anymore because when he sees me coming, he tries to find something else to do – get buggies…..sweep……clean up the broken pickle jar in aisle 4. Well, that’s just fine with me because I hate getting home to find my bread smashed and all my frozen stuff in individual bags instead of together. Is this rocket science? That being said, we all end up with smashed bread sometimes. I will usually make homemade croutons (https://www.humoroushomemaking.com/?p=205), but this time I decided to make breadcrumbs. You can buy these at the store, but it’s usually cheaper to make your own. Plus, they just taste a lot better. If you can get some reduced bread, even better! Any kind of bread will work. Also, sometimes it’s just nice to pulverize something to smithereens. You know you want to.
My favorite way to make breadcrumbs is using my food processor. I love this kitchen appliance! If you don’t have one, you should really consider getting one……I see them at yard sales all the time. It’s such a great tool to have – it makes a lot of kitchen tasks a LOT easier. I think it does lots of cool stuff, but I haven’t read the manual yet. Manuals intimidate me. I need appliance manual therapy.

Tear your bread into fairly large pieces and throw it onto the canister. Now, most people will tell you to cut the crust off first. Not me. I love crust! It’s probably my favorite part. I would be happy just eating pizza crust. The heel is my favorite slice of bread….so I leave it on. If you hate it, you can cut it off……but it will cut down a LOT on the volume that you’ll get.

Now, turn it on! It will make big noises. You can feel very industrious. It makes as much noise as some of Barry’s tools! I feel powerful. You don’t need to let it work forever. It really won’t take very long to get them into very small crumbs.

Voila! Aren’t they pretty and uniform? It took what, like 30 seconds? How can you tell me that you don’t have time for that?
If you don’t have a food processor, you can also do this in the blender. I inherited this blender when I married Barry. It was his. I don’t like it…..but it’s what I have, so I use it. Don’t tell him though. He loves his blender. They’re very close.
See, my blender even has its own crumb setting! It doesn’t make any sense to me. I think it should just have one setting. It always seems to work the same. If I press puree or crumb, it always acts the same. I think those settings are just to make you feel good. I don’t mean to rain on your parade.
Tear the bread into chunks again and throw it in. Give it a whirl. You might have to take the lid of and move the pieces around a bit to make sure they all get crumby. Don’t turn it on with the lid off……unless you want breadcrumb rain. Dottie would LOVE that.  As a side note, my daughter is currently sitting beside me playing with Aunt Jamey’s old chapstick and banging her head against the couch. Sometimes she really reminds me of myself.
Let’s say that you don’t have a blender OR a food processor. You can also make crumbs with your kitchen knife. It works better if you let the bread sit out a bit and get crusty. I was in a hurry and just wanted to show you that it could be done. The pieces won’t be as small, but it works. Use what you have!
Sure, you could get out a Ziploc bag to store these in….but why waste a bag? You just emptied one. Pour your crumbs back into the bread bag. It was good enough to house the bread, why not the crumbs?  Now you have tasty breadcrumbs for any recipe that comes along! They would also be great on top of a casserole.
I tied mine up with a twisty-tie and labeled it for the freezer. I didn’t need them anytime soon, so I didn’t want them to get moldy or anything. If you freeze them, when you’re ready to use them, just take them out of the freezer and let them thaw in the fridge. Our big loaf of bread turned into a tiny bit of crumbs. Funny how that works. I’m a continuous science fair project around here. Also, if you want to make crumbs just when you need them, 2 pieces of bread will yield about ½ cup of crumbs.

    Stacy, Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed touring your site “houmouroushomemaking”. My children are grown and on their own now. My husband, retired from a paying job, helps with the homemaking duties which in turn leaves me more time to weave (he calls it “wee!ving” because I enjoy it so much lol!)
