![]() Farm fresh eggs cost more than eggs at the store. It’s true. Most farm fresh eggs will cost you $2 and up per dozen. Ya know, I’m not often the person who will tell you to go with the more expensive route…….but I’m telling you that today. If you have the chance to switch to farm fresh eggs instead of store bought, you really should. I made the change and I haven’t looked back. They are delicious AND I don’t worry about all the crap that could be associated with them – pun intended. During our Storeless month we switched to buying farm fresh eggs from my friend Leslie at NLV Farms. It shouldn’t be a big surprise to you that I am a supporter of local business – and fresh eggs are about as local as you can get. If you haven’t thought about buying farm fresh eggs, you might change your mind after this. |
![]() Farm fresh eggs just taste better. When I was doing research, I found that farm fresh eggs have a firmer yolk and a VERY clear egg white. That is largely due to what they are fed on the farm versus at a factory farm. I just think they are so pretty. I can stare at this photo all day. It should be framed. I love eating food that is pretty AND good for me. Fresh eggs are just going to taste better and be better for you because of the environment the chickens are raised in. Did you know that most eggs that make it to the store could be up to 45 days old?? That doesn’t sound appealing to me at all. While they are prettier, they don’t peel prettier. Because they are fresh, the egg white is still pressed hard against the shell, so they don’t peel clean when you boil them. The longer they set, the better they peel…..which is why store bought eggs peel the best. |
![]() When you buy farm fresh eggs, they’ll all be different. That’s the charm for me…….I’m more of a “different” person anyway. I always wondered how in the world they could get all those eggs to be the same exact size. I probably don’t want to know, so lets not even go there. The color of the shell depends on the type of chicken. But I’m not a hater – I like all chickens. I’m not the kind of person that likes all my apples to look the same….or all my clothes to look the same…..or all my jelly beans to be the same color. So, why would I want all my eggs to be the same color and size? You use farm fresh eggs just like you use store bought eggs. But I won’t lie. Every time I open my carton of farm fresh eggs, I just smile. They’re unique. They’re mine. They’re tasty….they’re gone. |
![]() How can you find farm fresh eggs? Usually you can find them at a Farmer’s Market. If you’re not visiting one of those, you should be. We’ll cover that later. Ask around. I’m lucky that I have a friend who sells them. They will cost you more, but trust me…..you won’t mind. You’re supporting a local farmer AND feeding your family some stinkin’ good eggs. If we would all just buy local and support our friends and neighbors, I think this would be a much happier world. Working together – bartering stuff….man, I love it all. I think sometimes that I was born in the wrong generation. |
![]() You’ve heard me mention before that I’m very bitter about not having my own chickens due to stupid townhouse rules about animals and no pigs on the deck and no chickens wandering the streets. Lame. However, one day I will move….and one day I will have my own chickens. I have already chosen my chicken coop for Barry to build. Isn’t it cute? *Sigh*You can come visit it one day. As a side note, I encourage you to watch the documentary “Food, Inc.” It has moved Barry and I toward buying local from small farmers versus buying from the grocery store. Buy local. |
Way to go Stacy…..! Awesome article!
You are SO right about farm fresh eggs. Hubby and I never looked back after the first time we tried one. We live on a farm and hope to have chickens soon so we can provide our own eggs.
And also, I echo what you say about Food, Inc. Boy has my view on food changed!!
I would like to know where this farm is. I briefly looked on facebook, but didn’t see their location. I feel like we don’t live that far apart (I’m in Johnson City), and am wondering if they r close enough for me to pick up some eggs. I’m growing a garden n would love some fresh eggs.
They are in Speedwell, VA…..a good distance from you. 🙂
You might try the Farmers Market there.
My only suprise of everything I’ve read on your blog, besides your blantant refusal to pronounce keff fear correctly, ha, is that u live in a townhouse. P.s. I’m trying to figure out a way to have chickens myself. They seem to be off limits in Johnson City
🙂 I am pronouncing it correctly. Since there are three correct ways to do it, I imagine we’re both right. 🙂
I’ve seen “Food Inc.” It’ll definitely make you think twice about store bought dairy products. My brother is now living on a small farm and just bought some baby chicks for eggs. I may have to “borrow” a few from him some day. 😀
I want chickens too, but I guess I need to move to a farm. We don’t have rules, but I don’t think the neighbors would appreciate it…LOL. I love farm eggs too, although I have to admit I have been grossed out more than once by it. If you intend to raise your own….know how long ago the chicken laid the egg.
