Around our house, we have come to love making our own skincare products. There are many benefits to making things at home, and it’s a lot of fun too! We are always looking for new things to make instead of buy, and this soothing balm is a favorite.
About a year ago, we started making this soothing balm with items I already had in the kitchen. We use this balm on everything! My kids call it “that medicine you make”, and they are always asking that I put it on something! With summer just around the corner, we’ll be using this balm more and more.
If you don’t have all of the ingredients listed, you can check the bottom of this post for substitutes that can be used. If you aren’t familiar with these ingredients, don’t let that stop you from trying them!
This recipe also calls for infused oil. If you’ve never infused oils, please read this post before starting the following recipe. You’ll be amazed at how simple it is!
You’ll Need:
½ cup calendula infused coconut oil
½ cup calendula infused avocado or olive oil
3-4 tablespoons beeswax pastilles
10-15 drops lavender essential oil
What You’ll Do:
- Create a double boiler by placing a medium glass bowl over a pot of boiling water. You can also place a small washcloth on the bottom of a pot with boiling water and place a glass measuring cup inside the pot.
- Add your infused oils and beeswax to the glass bowl.
- Allow wax to melt, and stir with a wooden skewer or spoon.
- Remove from heat and add lavender essential oil. Stir until well incorporated.
- Pour into glass or tin container and label. Store in a cool dark place for up to a year.
Cleaning tip: Beeswax tends to harden quickly, and it can make a mess on your containers and utensils. So, it’s a good idea to wipe down your glass container with a paper towel immediately after pouring.
How to use:
Place a small amount of salve wherever you need. Please remember, for serious burns or deep wounds, you should always seek medical attention.

Substitutions:
Here are a few substitutions you could make to this recipe and still have a fantastic balm.
Coconut oil and avocado oil – extra virgin olive oil, babassu oil, or any other carrier oil
Calendula infusion – plantain leaf, parsley leaves, witch hazel bark, comfrey leaf
Beeswax – caranuba wax, candelilla wax (use only 2-3 tsp if using these waxes)
Lavender essential oil – tea tree essential oil, chamomile essential oil
Optional Additions:
2 tsp raw honey
2 tsp lanolin
1 capsule vitamin E oil
We use something very similar for my son’s eczema, usually with calendula, comfrey, and plantain if I have it ( I think I am the only person in the country who doesn’t have plantain somewhere in my yard!) I have also done a whipped version with palm shortening that is easier to apply when the skin is really sore.
Thanks for the tips!
This is just what we need around our house! We tend to get lots of bumps & scrapes & bug bites this time of year! I checked out the link to Lexie’s site & loved all the items she sells. I am going to save up & purchase this salve & some of her soaps. I definitely don’t have time to diy them. Have a great day! 🙂
Thanks, Jenny!
Using beeswax to make balm is on my someday list. Thanks for sharing. Pinning!
My someday list is super long.
Thanks, Sonja! Go for it! It’s not hard at all to use, just make sure you wipe everything out right away!
Thanks for letting me share this DIY, Stacy! I’ve had to use this balm a lot this weekend, because we all worked in the yard for the first time this year. 🙂
Thank YOU, Lexie. You are “da balm.” BHAHAHAHAH!
