Strawberry Grunt
*UPDATE – See this post about our new eating habits.(7/10/11) So, we’ve covered cobbler, crisp, crumble and now we’re on to…..grunt. Grunt is just fun to say. Grunt. Grunt. Grunt. Actually grunting is fun to do too. Try it. If you’re having a hard time doing something, grunt and it’ll make it easier. If you grunt because you can’t get a jar open, your manly man will come to your rescue and take care of the problem. Try it. Aside from the obvious body noise, what is a grunt? It’s like a cobbler, but you cook it entirely on the stovetop. You stew your fruit until it starts to get thick and then you drop dough on top, sorta like dumplings. Then you put the lid on and let the steam cook the dough. Pretty easy. It’s called a “grunt” because of the sound the liquid makes, bubbling up between the dumplings as they cook. I’ve also heard this dessert referred to as a Slump…..but grunt just sounds better so we’ll stick with that. Grunt. Let’s GRUNT! [Read more…] |
Cinnamon Roll Cherry Cobbler
***UPDATE: See this post about our new eating habits. (7/10/11) This is a Stacy original……sorta. I saw the idea somewhere, but didn’t like the ingredients. So I used the idea, but different stuff. It’s a Stacy Sorta-Semi Original. Go with it. So far we know what a crumble and crisp are, so today let’s learn about cobbler. My mom has always made the best cobbler. I’m guilty of trying to eat more of the breading part….and leaving the fruit. Yes, it was me. I confess. Sorry Mama! American cobblers are “fruit stews with dough dropped on top before baking.” God created them on day 8. They rank up there as one of my favorite desserts of all time….right beside Lava Cake. Don’t confuse them with British cobblers that have a meat filling. If you’re expecting sweet and get meat, your day just might be ruined. They are always best when eaten warm with ice cream. *Slobber* [Read more…] |
Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
*Please see notes at the bottom for additional help and tips added by readers.
I don’t have a dishwasher. I’m weird and like to wash my dishes by hand. Most of the time, I want my dishes right after I wash them to use again…especially if I’m in a cooking frenzy. I hate the thought of waiting for them to wash and waiting for them to dry. Good grief. No thanks.
There was a dishwasher here when we moved in, but I used it to store cake pans. Finally, I told Barry to get the silly thing out of my house and replace it with something useful – a cabinet for my pans. He did, and now I’m happy.
That being said, I know most of you have a dishwasher and I’ve had requests to post a homemade dishwasher soap recipe. So, I did tons of research…and here’s what I found out – it’s hit or miss. Really.
Some people like it, and some people don’t. The recipes I found were all similar, so that’s the one I’m going to give to you today. To get it tested, I gave some to three of my friends and they’ll review it for you at the end.
It’s a very simple recipe. You’ll only need salt (regular), borax, and baking soda. That’s it. We like to keep it simple here at Humorous Homemaking. Simplicity is bliss…….it’s also a pattern company. [Read more…]
Mini Pear Crisps
*UPDATE – See this post about our new eating habits.(7/10/11) I love crispy food…..well, food that’s meant to be crispy. Some food isn’t meant to be, but it ends up that way. Use a timer, okay? We’ve looked at a crumble and today we’re meeting our friend Crisp. What’s the difference? Oats. Yep, that’s all. A crisp’s topping is more granola-like and can include coconut or nuts. So, if you’re looking to get your fiber in for the day, go for a crisp over a crumble. My favorite crisp is apple, but Barry likes pears so that’s what I went for with this recipe….and I made them mini. If you want to do a regular sized crisp, just use an 8 inch square pan. Buying Farm Fresh Eggs
Farm fresh eggs cost more than eggs at the store. It’s true. Most farm fresh eggs will cost you $2 and up per dozen. Ya know, I’m not often the person who will tell you to go with the more expensive route…….but I’m telling you that today. If you have the chance to switch to farm fresh eggs instead of store bought, you really should. I made the change and I haven’t looked back. They are delicious AND I don’t worry about all the crap that could be associated with them – pun intended. During our Storeless month we switched to buying farm fresh eggs from my friend Leslie at NLV Farms. It shouldn’t be a big surprise to you that I am a supporter of local business – and fresh eggs are about as local as you can get. If you haven’t thought about buying farm fresh eggs, you might change your mind after this. [Read more…] |
Cinnamon Blackberry Crumble
***UPDATE: See this post about our new eating habits. (7/10/11) There are tons of fruit desserts out there…..and they all have different names. Crisp……crumble……cobbler….pandowdy. Well, if you’ve ever wondered, “What the heck is pandowdy?!” then the next few weeks are for you! I’ll uncover several different fruit desserts and tell you what they are…..then you can tell your friends and they’ll think you’re a culinary genius! Today we’re making a Crumble – Cinnamon Blackberry Crumble. A crumble begins with a fruit on the bottom. It’s given a topping that consists of flour, sugar, and butter – a streusel. The three are mixed together until “crumbly” and then sprinkled on top of the fruit. It will give the topping a cookie-like taste. This recipe actually adds cookies in the topping to give it a little extra oomph. “LET’S GET READY TO CRUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Sorry, I’ve always wanted to say that…..that phrase fits so well with so many things. “Let’s get ready to VACUUUUUUUUUMMMM!!!” “LET’S GET READY TO POOOOOOTTTTTTTYYYYYYYYY!!!!” Anyway, on to the fruit! Homemade Baby Wipes
When we had our baby shower, we received some really great gifts including baby nappy cakes Australia. One of my favorites was from one of Barry’s family members (Thanks Joy!). Part of her gift was a wonderful tub of homemade wipes. She included the “recipe” because apparently she had heard that I’m really into that. 🙂 Those were my favorite wipes of ALL TIME! They blow store-bought brands out of the water. You’d be amazed at how much poop you can wipe up with those things! After all, Bounty is the quicker picker upper. Bet they didn’t have THAT in mind when they were coming up with a slogan. Anyway, a reader asked me if I’d do a step-by-step for how to make your own wipes. When you read this, you’ll wonder why you’ve not been doing it all along! It’s SO easy and they work great! Let’s use Joy’s recipe and wipe some butts, shall we? [Read more…] |
