Almost every recipe for baking a cake tells you to bake the cake until it tests done in the center. I have this lovely little Pampered Chef do-hickey that does the job for me. It’s handy to have around. But what if you don’t have one? What if you don’t have a toothpick either? Hey, it could happen. I mean, you could be baking a cake in the hotel – or in the woods – or in the back yard. Of course there aren’t any Pampered Chef cake testers in there…..or toothpicks. What’s a girl to do? Use dry spaghetti! (There is no need to tell me that there is not dry spaghetti in a hotel, the woods, or the back yard.) [Read more…] |

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Welcome to A Very Cookie Christmas! All this week I’m going to be giving you some awesome cookie recipes that you can make and share for the holiday….or make and eat for the holiday. Sometimes when it comes to cookies, sharing is highly overrated. Around my family I’m sorta known as the Cookie Queen – my cookies rock. However, don’t worry about me getting a big head…just when I start to think that I’m really something, I spill an entire jar of kefir down the drain and then pour maple syrup all over the kitchen table. I’ll give you a few of my cookie baking tips as we go along, so that you too can make awesome cookies. Today I’m sharing my #1 favorite cookie – Oatmeal Raisin. |
Before we get started, I want to let you in on a little secret…..all these recipes use whole wheat flour. I know that most of you don’t own a Nutrimill, so I wanted to make sure these recipes worked with regular, store-bought flour. For all these recipes I’ll use King Arthur White Wheat Flour. King Arthur is my favorite brand of store flour. It just seems to be of the best quality. [Read more…] |
Butternut Ice Cream
Let’s get serious here for a minute. If you’re going to be making and eating all these wonderful holiday goodies, shouldn’t you have some awesome ice cream to go with it? I think so. In fact, missing out on the ice cream part would totally put a damper on your holiday celebration. Christmas without ice cream is like Stacy without an accident….it just doesn’t happen. So, in honor of you and to help you celebrate correctly, I created an ice cream recipe that would pair well with any holiday delight – pecan pie, apple pie, pumpkin pie, chocolate cake, any cake, any cookie, dirt, macaroni, etc. Let’s make Butternut Ice Cream Y’all! Crock Pot Curried Sweet Potato & Carrot Soup
I’m just going to tell you, the name of this soup is really weird….and kinda gross. If I had seen it in a cookbook, I would have made a nasty face and passed it by as quickly as possible. Curried? Sweet Potato and Carrot curry? EWWW! My great friend, Erinn sent me this recipe with the recommendation that it was awesome. I trust Erinn. I trust her enough to make her nasty sounding Curry Soup – that’s love. And guess what? I loved it! It has an amazing blend of flavors and they all pair together wonderfully! [Read more…] |
Oatmeal Raisin Scones
A scone tutorial is wayyyyyyy overdue here. I am so sorry I’ve let you down in such a fashion. It’s a crime really. I should be sharing scones with the whole world! Scones are my favorite breakfast pastry – they beat out muffins, pancakes, and even…..doughnuts. GASP! Really my friend, if you aren’t embracing the scone love then I’m just not sure what’s wrong with you. That’s beyond my scope of help here at Humorous Homemaking. Seek medical advice. [Read more…] |
Advent 2011
Last year I told y’all about our family Advent Christmas tradition. We LOVE this part of the season. It’s a time for us to enjoy each other without the craziness of the retail shopping world. I’m just not really into hitting up all the stores for great deals on battery operated toys and things I have to dust. That’s not how I roll. Instead, we spend time together and make memories for Annie. In lieu of putting gifts into the pockets of our Advent calendar, we put slips of paper with family activities on them. Barry didn’t use to be the type of person that enjoyed Christmas, but after starting this tradition, he is actually starting to soften up and enjoy the holidays…..it might also have something to do with the goodies I keep around the house. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Amen. [Read more…] |
Kitchen Tip Tuesday (11/29/11)
I try not to do things that make additional dishes for me to wash. I don’t have a dishwasher (by choice). I AM the dishwasher. Sometimes when I have a pan of bars like this, I can get tired of washing the spatula over and over. Yes, I could put the bars in a different container – but then I have ANOTHER dish to wash. And when we have granola bars, we’re into them all day long. That’s a lot of washed spatulas. |
So, I solve the problem by just leaving my spatula in the pan and putting a shower cap over it. I normally use an ugly white spatula, and it doesn’t photograph well…..sorta like me, with my mouth always open. Par. I wash it one time…..so that leaves me time to do other various things like dust. *Cough* |

Personalized Gifts – Placemats From Storybook Pages
Today is the last day in the Natural Holiday Blog Carnival…..I know you’re as sad as I am. Today we are all covering homemade gift ideas and gift inspirations…..and I might get ousted from the group. This is NOT natural. It includes laminate, which I’m pretty sure wasn’t around in the Garden of Eden. It also includes a laminating machine…..ditto on the Eden thing. Oh, and a printer. Gosh…..I’m just not with it this week, am I? But, I saw this idea online and I HAD to do it – had to. I didn’t have any choice. By now you know I’m a total bookworm. If I see ideas for gifts that involve books, I’m all over it – especially if it’s a way to recycle something that otherwise wouldn’t get any use. That’s natural – right? Recycling. Yep. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. [Read more…] |
