![]() We love smoothies here at the Myers house. If I’m going to be making a lot of them, I make a smoothie base and keep it in the fridge (thanks Brandy!). I am always looking for good ways to use up my kefir and get the great benefits of all the probiotics……especially as it’s getting closer to the time of year when sickness abounds. This is one of my favorite smoothies – probably because it has peanut butter in it and I’m a peanut butter fanatic. I’ve used kefir in this smoothie, but feel free to use plain yogurt in its place. You’ll need kefir (or yogurt), a ripe banana, honey (I used raw), wheat germ, peanut butter and vanilla. [Read more…] |
Stacy’s Adventures in Lemonade!
I keep seeing all these pictures and posts about making homemade lemonade. I always pass over them because, well……I hate lemonade. Barry loves it though. BUT, I do like the strawberry limeade from Sonic. Then I was in Food City and something came over me and I decided to pick up four lemons since they were on sale. I could tell you it was the Holy Spirit…..but this wasn’t a spiritual experience AT ALL. I mean, it’s just lemonade. How hard could it be? Surely I, Stacy of the Kitchen, could conqueror lemonade. Well lemonade is stupid. |
![]() This is what I started out with. I was so tickled with myself. You should have seen me bee-bopping around the kitchen. I thought I was really something. I pulled out the lemons, some strawberries, stevia, and lime juice. Oh yeah, I thought I was really going places. I really should have consulted y’all on Facebook first. [Read more…] |
Grinding Flour In Our Nutrimill
![]() Meet my new kitchen “tool.” Hi Nutrimill! I say “tool” loosely because it’s currently still a toy – I like playing with it. I get giddy……I wake up early and I get giddy with excitement over a mill – I think I was born after my time. So, I thought all of you should get acquainted with our new family member since you already know everyone else. The Nutrimill grinds grain into flour. Remember I said we were making all our own bread products now? This is just the next step in Healthy Eating for us. I did tons of research before I bought this baby. I read everything I could find and I picked my friend Stephanie’s mind. I’m sure that she’s wishing Stacy would just go away. I’m like a boomerang that keeps coming back. We decided on the Nutrimill instead of the other various mills on the market because it was supposed to be the quietest, have the biggest storage container, and you can turn it off while it’s grinding (unlike some of the other models). By now you know that only crazy things happen when I’m trying to cook, so I needed that option – Dottie will throw up or Annie will “clean” the toilet. [Read more…] |
Homemade Mayonnaise
I’m going to be honest with you. I hate mayo. It makes me want to gag. BLECH! In the words of Annie – Sheweeeeeeeeeeeeee! But, Barry likes mayo so I use to buy it for him. I also use it in recipes. Yes, I can tolerate it in stuff but you’ll not find me putting it on my sandwich plain….it must be mixed in something. But, now that I’ve switched to homemade, my tastes might change as it does with a lot of homemade items. This is SO easy you’ll wonder why you haven’t always been doing it. I just love making stuff at home. It makes me feel so…..so……homey. Not be confused with A HOMEY. I’m not that cool. |
![]() You’ll need eggs, OLIVE OIL, cider vinegar, yellow mustard, sugar, and salt. Olive oil is one of the very best oils for you. I know, I read stuff. I’m starting to go through a lot of it so now I buy it in a gallon jug. [Read more…] |
Mama’s Homemade Syrup
![]() |
![]() *UPDATE – See this post about our new eating habits.(7/10/11) This is the best syrup in all the ENTIRE world! Holy moly. I could drink it with a straw……but I’m pretty sure that would wind me up in the ER. Nix that. Anyway, it’s good stuff. Sometimes Barry’s mom gives it to me and then I give her a big hug. I think she’s buttering me up to make her a Coconut Pie. Butter me up baby! When I was growing up, my mom always made her syrup. No, we didn’t go out and tap a tree in the front yard…….she made it using sugar and flavoring. I loved it then and I love it still. My sister didn’t eat it though. She would only eat Aunt Jemima. I think my Grandma had something to do with that……she would make Aunt Jemima talk. Grandma’s are really good for spoiling your kids so they only eat certain things. Just ask my cousin, Robbie. Yeah, I know it’s pure sugar and not the real thing, but it’s still yummy. And easy! Plus, it’s nice to know this recipe in case you run out of syrup and need something for your pancakes on a cold morning when you don’t want to run to the grocery store. You really should stockpile syrup though. It’s a necessity, like toilet paper. So, let’s learn how to make our own syrup just like my Mama makes! [Read more…] |
Ode to Thanksgiving – Sweet Potato Biscuits
![]() |
*UPDATE – See this post about our new eating habits.(7/10/11) I feel eternally sorry for people who aren’t from the South. Biscuits just aren’t biscuits unless they’re southern-style. This year at Thanksgiving I think I’ll say “I am thankful for biscuits. Amen.” Ya know, biscuits aren’t a traditional bread for a Thanksgiving table. But why not mix it up a little this year? These Sweet Potato Biscuits are so moist and delicious, you’ll be eternally sorry if you don’t make them. I’m eternally sorry that we ate them all already. If you’re not from the South, follow these directions and you can pretend that you’re visiting. Now, practice saying “Please pass the butta y’all.” [Read more…] |
How to Make a Smoothie
Did you know there are actually restaurants that only sell smoothies? I still haven’t figured that one out. I’ve never been to one, as I’ve heard they’re pretty expensive. To me, it would sorta be like drinking my money, all blended up. Do you know where that money has been? Eww! Also, I think those smoothies are supposed to sometimes stand in as your meal. What is THAT about? Only a smoothie to eat? Man, I need something else with my drink, like cereal, toast, or waffles. Man cannot live on smoothie alone. I make great smoothies at home, using whatever we have on hand. You can do it too, because it’s SO easy! I’ll go step by step, giving you ideas so you can create your own custom smoothie, and for heaven’s sake please eat a biscuit with it. |

Yeast Bread Pizza Crust

**We now use our Nutrimill to grind our wheat. See recipe edits below.**
The final yeast bread I’ll cover is pizza crust. No, there is no throwing in the air involved…..unless you want to throw it in the air. I’m afraid to do that because my dog, Dottie, is a little too quick. Dottie would be having pizza for dinner and we’d be having sandwiches. It really is very easy to make your own pizza dough and it tastes sooooooooooooooooooo good. It’s also a really good air freshener for the house. [Read more…]
Kitchen Aid Mixer Bread
**We now use our Nutrimill to grind our wheat. I also use sucanat or honey as the sweetener.**
There are some of you out there who aren’t weird like me. You don’t enjoy kneading bread. This recipe is for you! I got this recipe from my friend, Angela. Angela is a super-mom. She can do anything. This is how she makes her bread, and I have to admit – it’s nice. It lets you do other things in the kitchen while the mixer is doing all the work! Too bad I can’t hire the mixer to dust my house. It makes nice, big loaves that are great for sandwiches. So, let’s get mixing!

We need bread flour, yeast, eggs, salt, water, sugar, and oil. Pretty simple. This is stuff you should keep around your house if you ever plan to make bread.

Do you want to make people come running to your dinner table? Bake these. You’ll have neighbors lining up at the door begging to come in. “Stop letting your dog poop in my yard and we’ll talk.” See, it makes a great bargaining chip. They’re not hard to make. They take a little time but they are soooooooooooooooooooo worth it.
To make these rolls you need all-purpose flour, yeast, milk, sugar, butter Crisco, salt, and eggs. There aren’t any fancy ingredients here. This is good home cooking. Nothing crazy. I save that for the weekend.
In a large mixing bowl, mix your yeast and flour. Yeast looks so cool. I love yeast. Stacy loves yeast! [Read more…]
