Mama’s Tomato Soup – With Cloves

For as long as I can remember, my Mama has made this soup. She has spoiled me. I can’t even touch the “tomato soup” in a can. What is that stuff anyway? It tastes like a big bowl of nothingness to me. Yuck! (No offense to my husband and dad who actually like that stuff.)

This recipe is SO easy and SO frugal that I just had to share it. I’m tickled that my mom is letting you in on some of her awesome recipes like this and Sausage Macaroni. Crock Pot Venison Roast

Barry and I are HUGE fans of venison. I was raised on ground venison…so it’s not unusual to me. I was blessed to marry a hunter…even more blessed that he doesn’t make me come along with him to hunt. *Snore fest*

Venison is really great for you! If you can get your hands on some, I would highly recommend it. Ask around. Do your friends hunt? If so, they might be willing to give you some of their plunder, only charging you for the processing. SCORE!

It can sometimes be a little tricky to serve venison – you have to get the seasonings right to mask some of the gamey flavor.

Today, my friend Dani is going to share her recipe for Crock Pot Venison Roast…and some of her tips. Thanks Dani!!

Crock Pot Venison Roast. What's better than venison and butter? Putting them together in your crockpot!

Venison is an awesome red meat . With a family of avid hunters, our freezer stays full from one hunting season to the next with whitetail steaks, roasts and burger.

Notes:

Butter is a must: Unlike a beef roast there will probably be very little fat on your venison roast. The butter gives your roast a wonderful flavor and helps keep it moist.

Onions: They say adding the onion early in the roast helps to reduce the gameness of the venison. We eat so much that I don’t even know what gameness is anymore.

Another variation to spices: Replace thyme and rosemary with Old Bay.

Other Veggies: I had some left over green beans from the day’s lunch so I added them right before we had dinner, long enough to heat them through. You could add canned tomatoes as well if you like.

Leftovers: Prepare some noodles in additional stock or water and add the leftovers to make a soup for the next few days.

Other game meats: This roast also works well for elk, mule deer or moose meat.

Crock Pot Venison Roast

Ingredients

1 venison roast fresh or frozen
2 cups water or stock venison stock, beef stock, chicken stock – whatever ya got!
1 medium onion diced or 3 Tbsp dry onion
2 garlic cloves diced or 2 tsp garlic powder
Salt and Pepper to taste do use some salt even if it is just a pinch
3 Tbsp butter
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp rosemary
5-10 potatoes depending on size quartered
1 cup diced/chopped carrots

Instructions

Place roast in crock pot and add water or stock.
Add butter by placing it on top of roast.
Add remaining spices and onion.
Potatoes and carrots may be added at this time if you’re headed out for the day or you can add them about two hours prior to serving time.
Cook on low 10 hours or high 6 hours.

I love soup. Soup of any kind. I could eat it for lunch and dinner everyday and never get sick of it. Okay, maybe eventually, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Soup is perfect for any time of the year, and is a great meal that takes only seconds to prepare once it’s already made. We love having soup for lunches in our house. It’s the perfect meal to make ahead, freeze, and then stick in the crockpot when you are ready to make it.

In my house we do freezer cooking, which means taking one long day and making all our meals for the month. I make 2-3 batches of this soup on that day, which gives me soup all month long. [Read more…]

Crock Pot Beef Stew

Nothing is much more comforting on a rainy or cool day than Beef Stew. Here sharing her recipe is my friend, Mary, from The Encouraging Home. Thanks Mary!

I love beef stew or stew beef…however you say it. Meat, potatoes, and carrots ~ a comfort food that I love. This is an easy, yummy meal. Sometimes I cook the beef with vegetables, other times I just cook the meat and serve it over noodles or rice.

First, place diced potatoes, carrots, and celery in the crockpot. Add however many that you like.

Crock Pot Cheesy Sausage and Vegetable Soup

When Stacy asked me to do a guest post for Fix-It-And-Forget Friday, I was smile-from-ear-to-ear-and-giggle-a-bit excited. I immediately started to think about what I would make… and failed three attempts in a row (though don’t worry, the recipe below is a winner!) That lead to three *cough* interesting meals. The food would have been fine if it had been cooked correctly, but I did not know how to use the crockpot for those recipes.

It never occurred to me that I could not just pick up my slightly dusty crock pot and make an amazing meal. I tend to think I can do anything, which leads to a lot of humbling experiences. Ooops. Crock Pot Minestrone

Y’all today we have a guest post by my awesome friend, Becca from Frugal Wannabe. I met Becca at a workshop and she’s been a blessing to me ever since. Crock on!

I admit, I’m one of those weird people who can and will eat and/or make soup any time of year, even in summer. So, yes, I am bringing you a soup recipe when it’s warmish weather! I also love using my Crockpot, because I have 4 kids to care for during the day, which means almost no free time, and standing over the stove leaves plenty of opportunity to forget and burn food. I am known for burning grilled cheese sammiches. Oh well, on to the recipe!

To make this yummy soup, you need lots of fresh, yummy ingredients. You could use frozen if you want, but why, when you can use fresh?! Look at all this goodness.

Cheesy Kefir (Buttermilk) Drop Biscuits

By now, you’ve gathered that I love my dairy kefir. You’ve probably also gathered that I love biscuits from the multitude of biscuit recipes and references on here. When I can pair the two together, I get giddy enough to dance. And let me tell you something – kefir makes the most flakey and delicious biscuits you’ll ever have. Ever. You can quote me on that. I used to make a version of drop biscuits using Bisquick. Of course, I’m not buying Bisquick now that we’ve switched to whole wheat and I use my Nutrimill. Who needs Bisquick? I can make my own, dag-nabbit. So, here is my new recipe for drop biscuits – my go-to recipe when I need a bread quickly to serve for dinner. They are good enough for company and your toddler will cry when you cut her off after letting her only eat two.

Stevia Soda

I love drinks with bubbles in them……well, except champagne. I had champagne once – at a wedding. Everyone drank it at the same time for the toast and immediately when it was in my mouth I knew I was going to gag – it was TERRIBLE. But, since I was in a crowd I knew it was most likely unacceptable for me to spit it out – so I didn’t. But I’m sure I was making the most terrible face of all time. I hope it was not captured on photo for all of eternity. *Shudder*

You’ve already read about my capers with Water Kefir so we’re obviously not going to be drinking that. But sometimes I’d like to have something other than Teecino and water. This week we made Ginger Ale, which made my wheels start to turn. If I can flavor club soda with ginger, why can’t I flavor it with all sorts of things? I can! [Read more…]

Fix and Forget Friday – Crock Pot Texas Calico Chili

Sometimes when I start out with a recipe, I have no idea where I’m going. I have a basic idea in mind….but usually my basic idea falls to the wayside. I was going with a traditional chili when I started, but then I decided to switch it up a bit and add some more color – then Calico Chili was born…..and I added the name Texas on it because I used stew beef instead of ground beef. Homemade Hot Chocolate (Cocoa) Mix

I love hot chocolate when it’s cold outside. We like it best made with milk on the stovetop, but sometimes I like having it available at the drop of a hat, in powdered form. But have you read the list of ingredients on a hot cocoa box? Well, don’t. It’ll make you cry in the grocery story. I kept seeing homemade cocoa mixes galore before Christmas to act as gifts, but I didn’t make any – they all called for white powdered sugar. Since we don’t eat that anymore, I crossed it off my list. But THEN it started getting cold in Northeast Tennessee, and I wanted some cocoa. And when Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. Amen.
