Switching to Natural Deodorant

natural-deodorant

There are certain things in life you just don’t want to give up: chocolate, soap, chocolate, underwear, chocolate, clothing, and chocolate…to name a few. In switching to our more natural lifestyle I’ve made the change from conventional toiletries very slowly. Switching to healthier eating came easy for me because I LOVE food and all the information that goes with it.

But, as I’ve read and learned more, I’ve come to realize that the stuff they use in conventional beauty items can be dangerous. But I obviously don’t want to give certain things up – like deodorant. No one wants to smell like B.O.  So, we change a few things at a time. We’ve made the switch to natural soap and now we’ve also made the switch to natural deodorant.

Most antiperspirants on the market have aluminum in them. Why? Because the aluminum works to completely stop perspiration from occurring.  But maybe we need to have some definitions first.

Antiperspirant contains aluminum and keeps you from sweating

Deodorant allows you to sweat and simply masks the odor

Switching to Natural Deodorant

After I shave my pits I’m not exactly excited about rubbing them down with aluminum considering it has been linked to an increased risk for seizures, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, kidney problems and bone formation disorders.

Also, the body sweats for a reason. God is a genius and created us to sweat in order to cool down our bodies. We also sweat in order to get rid of toxins in our system. If we stop that natural process from occurring, we should expect to have problems.

“But,” you say, “Stacy…no one wants to smell like a sweaty pig.” Correct! I surely don’t…and I surely don’t want to sleep with a man who smells like a sweaty pig either. I’m just sayin’.

My friend, Lexie, from Lexie Naturals, has solved this problem for me by offering a high quality DEODORANT that’s made from all natural ingredients.

Switching to Natural Deodorant

Lexie makes her deodorant using only Sodium Bicarbonate, Beeswax, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, and Essential Oil. Nature’s bounty keeps you from smelling like a nasty ole skunk.

Both Barry and I have used Lexie’s deodorant – and we both love it! I love the tea tree oil scent mixed with lavender – very refreshing…and not too girly either. Because what man wants to go to work smelling like a bed of roses or daylilies?

The best part about Lexie Naturals is that it’s affordable. A 2.5 ounce deodorant is only $6.50! And you can also email Lexie to get wholesale pricing.

So, it’s time for me to be honest…like usual. Guess what? I’ve still got about 3 tubes of conventional deodorant left. I know, I know. But I can’t throw it out – and I hate giving it to someone else because I feel like that’s saying “Hey – I don’t wanna lather my pits up with aluminum…but I don’t really care about your pits, so here ya go.” :-/

When I finish off those tubes, it will be 100% Lexie Naturals for me and my family!

Switching to Natural Deodorant

BUT, if you think that you don’t want to buy deodorant and you’d rather make it yourself, Lexie has a great tutorial on making homemade deodorant! Because she’s just sharing and caring kind of gal.

As for me, at this time in life, I’m thankful to have somewhere to purchase instead of making it myself…because right now I’m just glad to have the time to APPLY deodorant. Can I get a witness?!

Also, at the bottom of the homemade deodorant post, there is a little list of stuff you need to know before using natural deodorant…like “don’t over-apply.” Right, Lexie? 😉  This deodorant does not keep you from sweating – it just keeps you from stinking…and that’s what I’m going for.

Now, time for the good stuff! I get to give away a 2 ounce size of Lexie Naturals deodorant! To enter, leave a comment telling me the stinkiest you’ve ever felt. For an extra entry, sign up to get Lexie’s emails and leave a separate comment telling me you’ve done so. Giveaway will run through Friday, March 29th at 9pm EST.

If you’d like to make a purchase from Lexie, she is giving Humorous Homemaking readers a 10% off discount! Woot, woot! Use code STACYMC10 at checkout. Good through Friday, March 29th.

NOTE FROM STACY: I am in love with the Vanilla Peppermint lip balm. For realz. Best lip balm EVAH!

OK, I have had stinky times… hospital stays of over three days and such… but I have to share the hour drive home when I picked up my little brother and sister who had hiked the Appalachian Trail for 1 week. They insisted they had just showered – and put on their same clothes!!! All windows open, A/C blasting!!! NOTHING was going to help all of us! I almost got physically sick!!! Yikes!

    Hi Stacy,

One thing that I did a couple of years ago because of my inability to find a natural deodorant that I was happy with was to start spritzing colloidal silver in the armpits instead. This still allows you to sweat, and silver is naturally antibacterial. This has worked very well for me. I don’t ever have any B.O. ( but then again I don’t sweat alot because I was born cold!) It’s even cheaper if you make it yourself or know someone who does 🙂

Stinkiest? probably a day during the newborn fog. I woke one morning stinking pretty bad and worrying that this would be the smell my daughter identified with me. It helped get the concept of mommy first.

Stinkiest I’ve felt was when I was a wild land firefighter. We’d be on assignments for 14 days, hiking in hot temps, putting out fires, sleeping in the dirt. Sometimes we had portable showers other times no. LOVED it but definitely smelly!

I’ve been looking for a good, natural deoderant. Even the store brands that carry a “natural” label have ingredients we’d rather not use. It’s been a “well, this is better than that” for us. Thanks for posting this. I’m looking forward to watching the tutorial.

Hi Stacy! So You don’t know me, but I read your blog daily and freaking love it! So, seeing as you have no idea who I am…I bet you can understand I’m a bit shy telling you my stinkiest! BUT, here goes nothin’: We don’t use AC in our house for cost purposes, and well I just love me some fresh air. Anyways, we co-sleep with our kiddos, and my daughter was about 4 months old during the peak of last summer. I still hadn’t balanced out my milk supply, so in the middle of the night, I would leak all over our bed and my PJ’s. Well, in the summer nights, between the sweat and the cloth diapers, and the heated up breast milk…I always smelled like a dairy farm! Yum. 😉

Thanks for you and your site. It’s made a huge impact on me and my family! We love you!!

Ok the stinkiest I have ever felt….. would have to be the summer I worked Boy Scout Summer Cam! I’m talking 6 weeks of complete outdoor living! Eating outside, teaching a class outside, cooking outside, sleeping outside (in a tent), and yes even showering outside. And where our summer camp is located the lowest temp for middle of summer is 105 degrees. I would take a shower and like 5 seconds after I would be covered in sweat again! I would wake up sweaty go to be sweaty. I taught canoeing so I was in a canoe with 3 teenage boys on a river with no shade for most of the day. I taught 3 one hour classes before lunch and 3 1 hour classes after lunch. Then we would do outdoor games and skits after supper each night. By the time I would go to shower I would be covered in sweat, river water, dirt, and fire smoke and ashes. I was never more happy and never more miserable to. I loved working with the youth, but man was I glad to get home after my 6 weeks was up! LOL

The stinkiest I’ve been is when I’ve tried natural deodorants – probably about a DOZEN of them!!! I would LOVE to get rid of the aluminum products, but I have to live in the society we’re in which doesn’t tolerate B.O.!!! Even when some of them covered odor adequately during a normal day, anytime I exerted myself more than normal (gardening) the odor would be there. I also had problems with the staining that resulted on the underarm area of my clothes! What can be done about that – even if the odor is masked? Stacy, just wondering if you ever experience issues with clothing staining from the natural deo.? I now have several t-shirts that have permanent stains on them. So … back to the unhealthy stuff. )-: But I’d still like to try again. Maybe the 13th time is a charm!

I’ve really been considering switching as well after reading all the aluminum links to bad stuff. Probably the stinkiest was when my 5 year old was a baby and I had a particularly bad night with him and then had a situation at work happen where I had to rush out the door. Come 4pm I was working in our warehouse and realized I could smell myself….and I realized I hadn’t brushed my teeth or put on deodorant. I’m not sure I even brushed my hair to be honest.

Thanks for all the great stuff you share with us from your site, I really appreciate everything. I went to sign up for Lexie’s Naturals but I am already signed up before. Thanks Stacy

Hi! I stumbled across your page via Pinterest because I saw a caption for whole food crockpot recipes! Love love crockpot recipes and it looks like you have some awesome ones. About this awesome deodorant…I have to say I feel pretty stinky from my 4 month old puking, pooing and drooling on me all day! Before hubby gets in the door good, he has a baby in his hands and this Mama is off to the shower!

The stinkiest I’ve ever felt…was on my husband and my 10-day around the Mitten (we’re Michiganders) camping trip. We stayed at all rustic campgrounds, and in the middle of the week spent one night in a hotel off Lake Michigan. I did get to shower, but let’s face it – hotel showers don’t make one feel as clean as one’s own..especially when the shower comes with its very own sandy bottom upon entering the room! :/

I would love to try Lexie’s deodorant. I’ve been compromising by using a scented Tom’s of Maine deodorant (but it has propylene glycol). The stinkiest I’ve been was when I used Tom’s unscented deodorant. It made me smell like onions or something.

I use a deodorant that does not contain aluminum but still is not natural. Have yet to find one I really like. Would love to find something for my daughter too as she has a major over abundance of sweat problem and does use an aluminum containing product. I hate giving it to her. I know this wouldn’t stop her from sweating but maybe I could talk her into it.

I think probably it was a few days after having my son. My husband was back to work right away and between my daughter’s needs, my son’s needs, pure exhaustion, and everything else in life, showers weren’t happening and I’m pretty sure deodorant slipped my mind, too. It was gross. I was gross.

I love this post! Thanks for the information about natural deodorant. My family has recently started making the switch to natural food and products. It hasn’t always been easy but I know we are working to be healthier! The stinkiestI have ever felt has to be after I had my first son. 16 hours of labor then to have an emergency c-section and another 5 hours before they thought I was well enough to get up and shower. This time included my throwing up on myself from all the drugs they had to give me!

Hmm….the stinkiest I’ve ever been was a little embarrassing. You know it’s bad when you can smell yourself. You lift your arm up to grab a cup for a little one and you think…I did shower today, right? One day was like this in particular, but I had no time to address it so I went about my business. I went over to my SIL’s house and she was like, “Can you smell that?!” “Do I smell like B.O.?” Then she starts going around trying to find the source of the smell. it would come and go, but I KNEW IT WAS ME!!! It was so embarrassing. I even told her at one point I thought it might be me, but she was like, “No, this is really bad…” And I’m like, I know!!!! Anyway, she ended up standing next to me and all of a sudden she starts sniffing me and she’s said, “It is you! Come with me.” She gave me body spray and had me spray it on – she had me try on like two different scents just to mask how bad I smelled. I can look back on it now and laugh, but it was not funny at the time. I was breastfeeding and the only thing I can chalk it up to was something funky going on with my hormones. It really was embarrassing! Needless to say, I layer on the deodorant now and I WILL always reapply if going somewhere later in the day. Would love to try a new and natural product!! Love your daily posts – keep ’em coming!!

The stinkiest I have ever felt? It must be the time we went camping in the fall and it was rainy, cold and miserable. I actually thought we would cancel, but everyone else wanted to go. So we did. I did not shower or change clothes the whole entire weekend! I either stood by the fire (yes, they built and maintained a fire in the rainy weather!) or was in the camper. Now this has become a very good memory because we laugh about how miserable it was out there! 🙂 And WoW did the nice, warm shower feel good when I got home! Ahhh!

I love the idea of not stinking and not using aluminum to do it.

As for the stinkiest I have ever been…
I have a brother who is 15 years younger than me. It fell to me to take him to the county fair one July afternoon. It was about 95 degrees out and I successfully kept him from eating before the rides. All was going well until he begged one more ride on the ferris wheel on the way out. At the top of the ferris wheel, he leaned over and vomited in my lap, completely soaking my shorts and the bottom of my shirt. He was immaculate.

I wiped off the best I could when we got off the ride and threw an old towel over my seat in the car that I kept for emergencies. I strapped him in the car seat and drove the fifteen miles to my parents’ house, eager for a shower.

My mother met me on the front porch and announced a water line had broken and the water would be off indefinitely. Also, she deemed me too stinky for the house. I sat on the porch swing stewing in brother puke for four hours in 90 degree plus heat. That was the stinkiest I have ever been.

Hi Stacey! Thanks for the giveaway! The ‘stinkiest’ I ever felt was at my bil 25th wedding anniversary! It was at the local auditorium with quite a few folks there. I had just started making and using homemade deodorant. I didn’t have the ingredients quite right, so when we got to the auditorium, I could smell myself! I was so embarrassed! It was July and if you’ve ever been in Alabama in July, you’ve got to have on deodorant, even sitting in an air conditioned room! I had on a sleeveless dress and my bil came up to hug us. All I could do was hug him back! You should have seen the look on his face! Needless to say, I have modified the recipe now, so that NEVER happens again! Blessings from Bama!

Making the switch to natural deodorant has been an easy decision but a stinky one. I haven’t found one deodorant to be completely effective, so I’m eager to try a new one. I would say the worst moment is singing in the choir at church realizing that the particular shirt I’m wearing had some sort of funky reaction with perspiration and perhaps my deodorant and was wafting a not so pleasant smell as I had to clap away. :(. Not fun, especially knowing that we had to do it all over again in the 2nd service.

Man, I love sharing stories. The stinkiest I ever got was in late summer, 1992. I was in college. My friends and I had been at a primitive campsite in Alabama for three days. Primitive: no running water, no facilities; because that’s what we did in college. There was a small pond, so we got wet, but never clean. On the way back home we decided to stop at the beach on Dauphin Island, just to put the finishing touches on our grime. In for a penny, in for a pound! We stayed on the beach getting salty and sandy until finally it was time to start back. It was only three hours back to Baton Rouge. We rode with the windows down.

Now, as far as the stinkiest I’ve ever felt…well, there are several great moments to choose from in my life, lol. I used to love getting really sweaty and dirty (and sometimes I still do). I’d say that the worst I ever thought I smelled was after my family spent the night in a tent downwind from a stockyard somewhere in the middle of Kansas in the summer of 1975. We smelled those cows (and the stuff that goes along with them) all night long, and for the next full day I was paranoid that I still had that smell on me. EEeeewwwww! Me smelling like the barn and my horse is like aromatherapy for my soul, but cows? Not so much. (With my apologies to all cow lovers.)

I don’t like to spend a lot on shirts because I ruin them with my stink fairly quickly. It is truly embarrassing. I would love it if thisccould be helpful to me. I love the smell of green tea oil too.

Every time I give birth to another baby (just had my third in Jan) my current deodorant stops being effective. This time I’ve been trying to use more natural ones. It’s been a nightmare! Really, I wish I was dreaming and could wake up. I tried a new one before church last Sunday. Raised my hand to praise God and was like “Whoah! What is that smell?!” I started checking the kids diapers and actually hoping for a dirty one. No luck. It was ME! I stank! To make matters worse I go to a small church and we are all family to each other…..we like to give hugs. I knew it was coming. Every lady in that building will eventually make their way to me to see the new baby and give a hug. I was mortified. I went to the restroom and sprinkled some baby powder on my pits in desperation. No luck. I now smelled like baby powder and B.O. So I faced the inevitable. I stuck a big smile on my face plastered my arms to my side and gave tiny hugs. All the while praying that no one could smell me. …… I still keep trying different ones without luck. I’ve been tempted more then once to switch back to the bad deodorant, especially after a recent Dr. Visit where I reeked. Being a mom is hard enough! Do we have to smell like we haven’t bathed in a week? lol

I started using homemade deodorant a few months ago- 2-3 TBSP coconut oil, 1/8 cup cornstarch or arrowroot powder and 1/8 cup baking soda. It’s so pleasantly neutral and works for me FAR better than store bought. I once had a nasty painful itchy rash from a name brand deodorant. It took weeks to clear it up, and in order to clear up, I couldn’t use anything under my arms. I was working in customer service (selling suits) in May and could smell my BO all day every day for weeks- ugh! I’m surprised I still managed to sell anything!
To be fair, the company tried to make it right, and sent lots of coupons for free items, which, at that time, made me happy- now I know it was a way to keep my business. Nowadays I’d rather make my own- it takes 5 minutes every few months 😛

In my move to natural, this has been my greatest challenge: find affordable deo that actually works. I have tried about 4 natural brands and none can stand up to my pits 🙁 … I have been unfortunate to waste money trying the under $10 brands and so reluctant to try the other “guaranteed” high dollar stink blocks. I am gonna have to give this one a try!

The stinkiest I have ever felt was after a sweltering day at the local wildlife preserve when I was working as a day camp director in college. I was singlehandedly in charge of 70 kiddos plus 12 other staff members. Someone left a kid at the bear enclosure, so I was running around in the 95+ degree heat trying to find him. Like 80 degrees hot -we have a thermometer to justify our moaning and groaning about it 🙂 I just started this job in the fall and cant believe how hot our little cubicle area got through the winter. My coworkers keep telling me, just wait until summer (OMG!) I already sweat every day while just sitting at my computer, and I totally agree, sweating is natural and what we are meant to do, so that doesn’t bother me too much. But smelling like BO while sitting in a meeting with your boss, and his boss, and his boss’s boss is uncool!! And those chemicals in typical antiperspirant scare me and my few attempts to use alternatives ended badly (aka- embarrassingly!) Thanks for the giveaway; I’m definitely going to give Lexie’s product a try!

The stinkiest I have ever felt (which is a hard thing for me to decide, because with 3 boys, I have had plenty of stinky moments!) is when I went down to the shore to help my parents clean up after Hurricane Sandy. I don’t think even the strongest deodorant could battle the swampy sea smell that took over my whole body those days – from head to toe, I felt grimy and stinky! Thankfully, they are now almost back to normal down there, so it was worth the stink! 🙂
I’ve been wanting to make the switch, too, and your post is giving me more encouragement to take the plunge!

I can honestly say without hesitation that the stinkiest I’ve ever felt, was after giving birth to my daughter. Between an induced labor that started around 7pm and several hours of contractions and over an hour of pushing, and finally agreeing to a c-section (during which I threw up, in my own hair cause I’m good like that), by the time my daughter had arrived almost 20 hours later, I was funky. Really funky – from head to toe. Even my poor mother was pushing tic-tacs on me because she said my breath was raunchy (I don’t even remember when I had brushed before then, the morning before?).

My stinkiest moments come when I am working in the yard during our humid summers. One particular morning I was pulling up ivy and dripping from the work, heat, and humidity. I was attacked by mosquitoes, ran into the house and hit the shower.

Wow…the stinkiest I’ve ever felt or been? The stinkiest I’ve ever been was last August after climbing up a stream bed, on a mountain, on the side of the Appalachian Trail. We went after two geocaches called HellBender and I Think I Can. The first was named for the hell bender salamanders that are becoming extinct in the area. The other was named because, well I didn’t think we could, but we made it! It was so hot and the climb was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. In addition to keeping me from falling, I had to help Brady up too. There are no trails, just fighting through bushes and water the whole way up. I was so sweaty and just plain nasty. Even commercial deo couldn’t keep up with that climb. I used to hate to sweat, but there is nothing like sweating it out on a good hike. You just feel so refreshed from the exercise even when you feel like passing out from being too out of shape, but yet accomplished becuase you pushed yourself and won.

Yes, we danced for 2 hours; talk about sweaty and stinky! So I would love to try this natural deodorant and put it to the exercise test!

Mmmm, the stinkiest I’ve ever felt? That would be 70% of the time, my daughter and I use a liquid crystal deodorant, that BURNS whether we shave or not, so we resort to”pit washes” several times a day! Neither one of us can use regular deodorant, there’s just something in it that does not agree with us. So trying this would be ideal! We already make our own skin lotion, but deodorant making would be a stretch for us considering our nutty schedules!
