An Apple A Day, For Dinner! {Crock Pot Chicken with Apples and Bacon}

Post by Contributing Author, Julie of Domestic Contessa

Apple season is here! When apples are in season, not only can you find the juiciest, most crisp and delicious apples, but they’re available for really low prices. And I think we all know what that means… Apple Cobbler, Apple Crisp, Apple Pie, Homemade Applesauce, Apple Cookies. And as if all the sweet recipes popping up on blogs, Pinterest, and cooking magazine covers aren’t tempting enough, I’m here to share a few more ways you can enjoy an apple a day… for dinner!

In my house, we eat apples for breakfast, lunch and dinner – and snacks in between! And while I love an apple pie as much anyone, I would much rather prepare savory apple recipes. So today, I’m sharing with you some of my favorite ways to enjoy apples for dinner, including a super easy and delicious recipe for the Crockpot: Sweet & Spicy Chicken with Apples & Bacon. 100 Days of Christmas Gifts {Book Edition}

Can you believe it’s 100 days till Christmas?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Also, if you don’t believe me, see this Christmas Countdown Clock.  It actually says 101 days…but they don’t count Christmas Eve. Lame. Christmas Eve IS Christmas too, ya know. Everyone knows that. Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of everyone’s system, let’s move along to my 100 Days of Christmas Gifts, the Book Edition!

We have decided to simplify even more than we usually do with our 3 Gift Christmas and extend that to gifts that we give this year. We’ve had talks with family members and decided not to exchange gifts for some and for others we’ve decided to simplify and give small, meaningful gifts.

What is more meaningful than a great book?! Being a huge book lover, I love giving and receiving books. I almost always give oodles of books as gifts because they keep on giving! I <3 books! Plus, they don’t really require lots of dusting, they don’t throw up on the couch, and they don’t make you look fat.   [Read more…]

100 Days of Meal Plans – Whole Foods Style (for FREE)

Over 3 months worth of meal plans all laid out for you! No thinking on your part. Just shop and cook!"

So, I have this thing I like do to do in my spare time…it’s called – planning meals. Yeah, okay. Stop your laughing. Some people knit. Some people sew. Some people play sports. I read cookbooks and dream up meal plans. I’m a wild and crazy girl.

You already know how much I love Plan to Eat. But what you don’t know is that planning meals is one of the highlights of my week. I also enjoy making beds, ironing clothes, and de-boogering my children. Gosh…I AM a weirdo.

But something I’ve learned is that not everyone enjoys de-boogering their children with a Nose Frida – and not everyone enjoys making their bed daily – and some people don’t even own an iron (THE HORROR!). And the most crazy thing of all is….some of you hate making meal plans! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Cue the freaky scary movie music! What is wrong with you people!? [Read more…]

100 Days of NO Processed Meals – Crock Pot Style

100 crock pot meals

If you’re new to Humorous Homemaking… let me just say, welcome, we’re so glad to have you here!

My 100 Days of No Processed Meals posts are fan-favorites, and this one full of Crock Pot style recipes is one that I go back to again and again. This post is the perfect go-to reference for awesome no processed meals you can make in your slow cooker. (In the American South, we call our slow cookers by the name of my favorite brand which is the Crock Pot.)

What do I mean by “no processed” meals?

No processed meals means that nothing in any of the these recipes calls pre-packed items like Italian Dressing, canned cream of mushroom soup, a package of onion soup mix, Velveeta (bless Velveeta’s heart), etc., and that’s a good thing!

You WILL find ingredients for these Crock Pot recipes like soy sauce, ketchup, canned beans, taco seasoning and mustard because there are clean versions of all these products that are minimally processed (for most folks) or are VERY easy to make your own clean version at home.  When a recipe calls for “taco seasoning”, I automatically make a sub in my head for the homemade version.

Also, please note…there is a difference between “processed” and “prepared”!

When I say “processed” in this context, I mean foods with ingredients I cannot pronounce: Velveeta, stuffing mix, Hamburger Helper. Prepared foods such as “canned beans,” “canned tomatoes,” or “ketchup” are easily made yourself or found at the grocery store with no added ingredients. A can of beans from the grocery store usually includes: beans, salt and that’s it. So, don’t be sending me hate mail about “You big fat liar! Canned tomatoes are processed food!” Yeah I know, but technically, so is anything you cook in your home because cooking is PROCESSING. Just so we’re clear. 🙂 **Comments on this post have been disabled because of nastiness – ain’t nobody got time for that.**

Mostly these Crock Pot recipes call for good, wholesome ingredients like meat, vegetables, broth and seasonings. And the results are meals so delicious that they make you wanna slap yo mama (if you’re not from the south, please know that’s a good thing).

Some of these recipes are mine and some are from other bloggers. I hope you enjoy the list, and that it’s a good resource for you. And if you like this post, you’ll likely enjoy my post of 100 Crock Pot Dessert Recipes and 100 Days of Meal Plans Whole Foods Style as well.

And while I’m thinking of what you might like, I’d bet you’d enjoy my books: Keep Crockin’: A Poorganic Slow Cooker Cookbook and Crock On: A Semi-Whole Foods Slow Cooker Cookbook – both are available in print or as eBooks. 😉 Shameless book plug.  Okay…ON TO THE RECIPES!

Keeping Costs Down in a Real Food Kitchen

Keeping Costs Down in a Real Food Kitchen

I hear all to often that eating “healthy” is too expensive. When I was a coupon queen, I would have agreed 100% with you. But now I’m on the other side of things – I’ve been eating this way for two years now and I can honestly say that eating healthy is NOT too expensive. In fact, we can’t afford NOT to eat healthy. Otherwise, in years to come we’ll be paying out the wazoo for health care.

I’m over at Keeper of the Home today talking about how to keep costs down in a real food kitchen. It is very possible to eat a healthy diet on a budget – and I know that for a fact because my budget and I are not soon parted.

Some other things I’ve written in the past might also be of interest to you:

So, if you’d like to have more tips about how to eat healthy without going to the poor house – and if you’d like to see just how we make it work – just hop on over to Keeper of the Home.

What do you think? Is eating a healthy diet worth the money?

10 Easy Ways to Cut Costs in the Kitchen

These days, everyone is looking to cut costs…I’m always looking where to save money and cut costs, so I like this turn of events.  Makes me seem more popular. Ha! I’ve been asked exactly how I operate in the kitchen to keep costs down and keep my budget on target.  It’s really not that hard, it just takes a bit of thought and effort. I’m going to give you 10 easy ways that you can cut costs in your kitchen too. Chances are, you’re already doing most of these things but you just haven’t thought of them as being “frugal.” You may just need to change your mindset.

1. Use leftovers. This is almost like a “daily duh” that I post on Facebook, but you’d be surprised at how many people just don’t use their leftovers. They make too much for dinner, put the rest in the fridge and it stays in there until it grows mold. That’s money down the drain. Make plans for those leftovers – they make a great next-day lunch. If your family hates leftovers, freeze what you have left and bring it out again later for a “new” meal. Trickery works sometimes. [Read more…]
