If you’ve been a follower for a while or have known Barry and me for a long time, then you know that we are very transparent. We are always open and honest with y’all. Even though for some reason talking about money is taboo, Barry and I don’t think that makes any sense, as long as we’re talking about it in the right spirit. In today’s post, we’re going to get into the details specifically about the Young Living business, because that’s where we’re spending a lot of time lately and we love it. For you, it may be something else – I get it. I still think you’ll find some value even if you find Young Living isn’t for you, so don’t move on just yet.
My husband and I are independent distributors of Young Living essential oils and when we originally purchased oils, we said we weren’t going to do the whole business thing. But that was not God’s plan! We found ourselves going down a path that we didn’t anticipate and we have been so very blessed that God’s plans were (and still are) bigger than our own.
Now, by law, whenever I talk about the business side of Young Living, I have to share the income disclosure. You’re going to see some really big numbers and it may shock or surprise you. People get uncomfortable talking about money, especially big numbers, but money is not evil, y’all. The Bible doesn’t say money is the root of all evil, it says the love of money is the root of all evil. In the hands of good people, money can do amazing things! In order to give more, you have to make more!
Who could you bless with more income?
Family, friends, missionaries? You can’t bless more people financially without more money. We are working hard for the money we’re earning; it’s not a get rich quick scheme. Anything that promises to be a fast-track to financial success…well…RUN AWAY! What we have today didn’t happen overnight. It has taken consistent work and effort. Most people would love to be able to make more money doing what they love. And that is what this has become for Barry and me.
What would you do if you found ourselves making a LOT of extra each month?
A “LOT of extra” is going to be different for each person, but put a number in your head. What would you do if you had that much EXTRA every single month? Dream big. In our case, we would give to a couple specific needs that we see. There are some people whose debts we would like to pay off. We’d like to be able to more actively support our friends in their missionary work. Especially as a homeschooling family, we would love to take our kids places they could learn more about science and history. We’d like to take a nice vacation (no joke – we’ve not been on a true family vacation since 2007 – BEFORE our kids were born). We’d just love to see a need and be able to stroke a check right away to meet it. Wouldn’t that be amazing!?
That’s why I decided to come right out and talk about Young Living.
Most people will say that you shouldn’t talk about the business side of Young Living before you talk about the oils. If y’all have been around any amount of time, you know that I am passionate about the oils. They have truly changed the life of my entire family. But just to be clear…when you become a wholesale member of Young Living and buy the starter kit, it doesn’t mean that you have to pursue the business side of things. But with that starter kit, you have the possibility – the privilege – to turn it into a business, if you’d like too.
I’ve realized that my Young Living business is a place where I thrive.
I’ve been very surprised how naturally the business side of Young Living comes to me. It fills a need that I didn’t know I had: to be part of a group of women who have the same goal of their family’s overall health and wellness in mind. It wasn’t even on our radar but it just fell into my lap! Maybe you’re like me and said, I can’t do this as a business because I’m an introvert. I get it – that was me! But because this is something I am passionate about, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable to share with others. It wasn’t until after I taught my first class, that I really learned that I loved it and it was something I was good at.
Some of you want to make money doing what you love, BUT you’re not interested in the health side of Young Living oils…yet.
Business growth and a love of the oils goes hand in hand. While some start out all focused on business, that’s rarely the case. Most just use them and find they naturally want to tell people about them because they work. It’s pretty simple, and you’d be surprised how many people just see you using a product and start asking questions about it. Plus, your kids won’t be able to keep their mouths shut! Mine tell people about oils all the time. And it’s pretty darn cute.
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty: what is required to earn a check from Young Living?
I’ll explain using the example of my friend Penny. Penny signed up under my link. When she signed up, since I was eligible for bonuses, I earned $25 as a cash bonus, as well as 25% of the amount of her purchase. I’ll also earn 25% commission on all her purchases during the first three months she is a member. In order to earn all that, I have to spend $50 each month myself. There is no penalty if I don’t spend that much – I just won’t earn any commissions.
After the first 3 months, a different kind of commission structure kicks in, called unilevel commissions. To earn these types of commissions, I have to spend $100 per month, but it makes me eligible for any/all commissions from any person who has ever signed with me or under my team members. Basically, if you’re spending $100 per month on Young Living products, you’re eligible for any/all bonuses and commissions from anyone who has signed with you or will sign with you in the future. It gets a little more complicated than that, but that’s the gist of it.
You may think that spending $100 is a lot. But think about it. I’m not just buying oils. I’m also buying toothpaste, shampoo, soap, cleaning products – there are so many great Young Living products that fit in our clean living lifestyle. It isn’t a big deal to make that commitment since I’m buying things I’m going to use – and not just oils.
Why does Young Living require you to spend money to earn commissions?
So you’ll use the products regularly! They want you to love the oils and to understand their benefits, know how to use them properly, and be able to talk intelligently about the oils to other people! If you’re going to make money in this business, you need to know the products and have an appreciation for what you’re selling. If you don’t love the product, why would you try to convince others to buy it?!
One other thing that’s probably useful to share here. You are NOT a reseller – you don’t keep any inventory or have to fill people’s orders. This isn’t one of those deals. You don’t end up with a garage full of stuff you have to try and sell. That’s NOT how this works. People order their own stuff from Young Living – you provide the support and help them learn about the products.
What do I do on a regular basis for my business?
First and foremost, I teach classes. Usually, I try to do at least 4 classes a month, both online and in person. I do LOTS of team mailings full of encouragement, prayers and scripture, research, notes, samples, rank up gifts. Living Lighthearted Oils is a branch of Humorous Homemaking. Everyone who signs up under me is allowed to join! I also do a lot of team support one-on-one by email, text message, Facebook messaging – if they need me and reach out to me, I am there for them! Shipping questions, oily questions, venting about their children misbehaving, whatever.
I also have a business group where I provide all the resources for someone who wants to do the business side of Young Living: graphics, PowerPoint presentations, guides, etc. This group is separate from the regular group because a lot of people who buy oils don’t want to do the business side and so it keeps things simpler for everybody.
I don’t care if you’re young or old, single or married, have a house full of littles or are newly retired – I  am confident that Young Living Oils can be life-changing for everyone. All you have to do is what I always say, “get off your blessed assurance and do something”.
Do I have a target market?
Figuring out who your target market is an important part of your business! My target market is overwhelmed moms who just want to do good, healthy things for their family, but don’t know where to start. Maybe you would like to targeting pet lovers. I know Penny wants to help busy women who have trouble sleeping. Maybe you want to reach athletes or nursing students. We all have individual groups of people we spend time with that we can share the amazing benefits of Young Living oils with.
How much money do you put back into the business?
Until you reach some basic milestones in the business, “they” say that you should be putting all your money back into the business, sending books, oils and other supplies to your team. However, I think how much you put back into the business depends on you, your budget, your needs and your goals. I am making a good paycheck from Young Living, but I’m also still putting a significant amount back into the business because we’re trying to grow the business at a pace we’ve set. It is right for us.
I want to see everyone blessed by this opportunity to make money doing what you love! If you decide that you want to join my team, you will get access to my homemaking course for free. You’ll have my support every single day. I will provide all the resources you need to start your business. Whatever it is you need, I will try to provide! If you know someone who would benefit from this post, I would love for you to share it.
