***UPDATE: See this post about our new eating habits. (7/10/11) There are tons of fruit desserts out there…..and they all have different names. Crisp……crumble……cobbler….pandowdy. Well, if you’ve ever wondered, “What the heck is pandowdy?!” then the next few weeks are for you! I’ll uncover several different fruit desserts and tell you what they are…..then you can tell your friends and they’ll think you’re a culinary genius! Today we’re making a Crumble – Cinnamon Blackberry Crumble. A crumble begins with a fruit on the bottom. It’s given a topping that consists of flour, sugar, and butter – a streusel. The three are mixed together until “crumbly” and then sprinkled on top of the fruit. It will give the topping a cookie-like taste. This recipe actually adds cookies in the topping to give it a little extra oomph. “LET’S GET READY TO CRUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Sorry, I’ve always wanted to say that…..that phrase fits so well with so many things. “Let’s get ready to VACUUUUUUUUUMMMM!!!” “LET’S GET READY TO POOOOOOTTTTTTTYYYYYYYYY!!!!” Anyway, on to the fruit! Homemade Baby Wipes
When we had our baby shower, we received some really great gifts including baby nappy cakes Australia. One of my favorites was from one of Barry’s family members (Thanks Joy!). Part of her gift was a wonderful tub of homemade wipes. She included the “recipe” because apparently she had heard that I’m really into that. 🙂 Those were my favorite wipes of ALL TIME! They blow store-bought brands out of the water. You’d be amazed at how much poop you can wipe up with those things! After all, Bounty is the quicker picker upper. Bet they didn’t have THAT in mind when they were coming up with a slogan. Anyway, a reader asked me if I’d do a step-by-step for how to make your own wipes. When you read this, you’ll wonder why you’ve not been doing it all along! It’s SO easy and they work great! Let’s use Joy’s recipe and wipe some butts, shall we? [Read more…] |

Crock Pot Lava Cake
***UPDATE – See this post about our new eating habits. (7/10/11) Let’s end the week with a bang…….dessert. Yes, you can even make dessert in the crock pot. I’m telling ya, it’s like some kind of miracle appliance! I love Lava Cake, and I always make mine in the crock pot. It’s very easy and it cooks while you’re getting other things done. Miracles I tell ya! Be prepared to slobber. [Read more…] |
Crock Pot Jerk Chicken Hoagies
****I have edited this recipe to fit our Whole Foods lifestyle by using homemade buns and organic ketchup.******** When I told Barry I was going to make these Jerked Chicken Hoagies, he kept going around saying, “What a jerk!” Yes, I married a comedian. Anyway, we love jerk seasoning in our house. What is it? It’s actually a Jamaican spice. Cooking “jerk style” means that you use a dry rub or a wet marinade for meats – the marinade being a very hot spice mixture. So, what’s in it? Allspice, peppers, cloves, cinnamon, scallions, nutmeg, thyme, garlic, salt, and pepper. It sounds like a weird combination, but it just works……trust me. Sorta like green beans and ketchup. They just go together. [Read more…] |
Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce
Wowza! This is GOOD stuff right here, y’all. I’m having a lot of fun playing with my crock pots…..and this one is a recipe you’ll probably add to your regular rotation.
And you’ll kiss me after dinner and bestow upon me tons of gifts in the form of fancy dishes (or enamel-coated cast iron cookware – HINT, HINT) and pretzel M&Ms. Yes, it’s THAT good.
Another plus to this one is that it makes a large amount, so you can put the extra in the freezer for another meal. You’ll start this in the morning when you go to work, and then when you come home 8 hours later, you’ll just have to boil your noodles and fix a side salad. Voila! I’m falling in love with my crock pots (yes, pots…..I have 5). [Read more…]
Crock Pot Meat Loaf
****We have adapted this recipe to fit our whole foods lifestyle by using organic ketchup and homemade bread cubes.******
Okay, I am about to blow your mind – did you know you could make meatloaf in the crock pot?! IT’S TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I <3 meatloaf.
Yes, I know it’s scary to some people, but I like it all sorts of ways. I will tell you that I don’t order it at a cafeteria or anything like that – that IS sorta scary. Hairnets freak me out.
Anyway, if you missed it you can see this post I did about making mini meatloaves. They are really fast! But, I like this one too…….because it cooks all day and is ready when you’re ready to eat! It’s like a miracle, I’m telling ya.
If you have to work, you could throw this in the crock pot in the morning before you got ready and ate breakfast. Then it would be ready when you got home from work! You want to kiss me, don’t ya? [Read more…]
Using Kefir
So, today we learn how to use kefir. If you missed yesterday’s explanation of what kefir is, you can go HERE to read it. Oh, and if you’re wondering how to pronounce it, say it like this – key-fur. Yeah, I know you were puzzling over that. We’re really loving kefir in the Myers house. I am thankful that my good friend introduced me to it. I love the health benefits and the fact that it’s so much cheaper than sour cream and buttermilk. Buttermilk is so stinking expensive……must come from some kind of golden cow. Sorta like gasoline comes from some kind of golden…….uh, pump? [Read more…] |

What is Kefir?
I’m sure most of you are like “huh?” You’ve never heard of kefir…..and I hadn’t either, until two of my friends told me about it. They were both using it and hailed the benefits of it. I shook it off myself, thinking, “nah, this is not for me.” I was wrong! I was sick a little last year, and I had to take antibiotics. If you know anything about antibiotics, you know that they are hard on your stomach. I had problems with them, and my friend told me that I needed to eat lots of probiotics – she was right. Once I upped my probiotics, I got better fast. Now I’m making kefir every day…….do I have your attention now? What is kefir? Basically, it’s fermented milk. That sounds pretty nasty, right? When I was told what it was, my first thought was “Ew!” Kefir tastes somewhat like buttermilk. It can be used as a substitute for buttermilk, plain yogurt, or sour cream. It’s chocked full of probiotics – it’s really, really good for you. It’s full of vitamins, minerals, and it is very easy to digest since it’s already partially broken down. It will keep yeast infections at bay…..sorry guys. Pretend you didn’t hear that. Some people who are lactose intolerant are able to drink kefir without a problem. There are TONS and TONS of health benefits. Go here to Dom’s Kefir Site to read them all. You can buy kefir at the store, usually in the health food section, or you can make your own. I am making my own, so let me show you how. It is very cheap to make once you get started. [Read more…] |
